How the no-cut LASIK technique changed the field of ophthalmology

Dr. Michael Mazaheri is one of the first surgeons revolutionising LASIK surgery. The basic procedure of this ophthalmological surgery involves cutting the flap of the cornea to reach the stroma and perform corrective surgery using laser. Dr. Mazaheri’s technique involves a procedure that doesn’t include cutting the flaps.

Spending over 10 years to perfect his technique, he now has a patent  to promote his flapless MLasik procedure. This method is preferred over the regular LASIK surgery as the flap on the cornea is the most sensitive part of the eye and doesn’t heal as efficiently as other organs, causing a 5.7% risk of complication if the procedure is done incorrectly.

This new and improved method of performing the LASIK brushes off a small layer of the corneal epithelium, using an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. Special contact lenses are worn by the patient following the surgery until the epithelium heals entirely.

Dr. Mazaheri’s work is credible and substantiated by his vast experience, starting as early as the age of 24, where he began assisting on the development of the research article on the effects of Aminocaproic Acid on epithelial healing. By the age of 27, he worked on a patent on flap complications which laid the foundation of the present flapless procedure performed by him. He advanced himself, studying the procedure and gaining associated experience for the same through detailed research, learning along the way how post operation care and medications could change the whole ophthalmological scene.

His knowledge and skill took him to perform hyperopic PRK, which is an extremely challenging procedure, following it up with effective post op care that changed the way a patient experiences haze formation and other complications post-surgery. He has taken time over the years to perfect his procedure an adapt to a solution that is safer, extremely effective and minimally risky as compared to the regular LASIK surgery.

A revolutionising change in the field of ophthalmology MLasik promises a clearer, brighter and better future for the generations to come.
