LaingBuisson data cited in Office for National Statistics’ Healthcare Expenditure Statistics
LaingBuisson welcomes the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) publication of the Healthcare expenditure, UK Health Accounts: 2017.
Chosen provider of independent healthcare data to the ONS, LaingBuisson, contributed market data on homecare, care homes, private medical insurance, fertility treatment, cosmetic surgery, NHS private patient units and independent hospitals to the ONS’ annual report on expenditure in the UK healthcare market.
These statistics are also supplied to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Eurostat and are used to benchmark the UK’s healthcare expenditure against the healthcare expenditure of other countries.
The data for 2017, the latest complete year available in the series, showed that total UK healthcare expenditure amounted to £197.3 billion, or £2,998 per person. This represented an increase of 1.1%, the lowest rate of growth since the start of the series in 2013. This was the result of the slowdown in growth in Government spending and in contrast, non-government spending grew by 4.3% in real terms.
Non-government expenditure represented 21% of UK healthcare expenditure in 2017 and comprises out-of-pocket expenditure, voluntary health insurance, non-profit institutions serving households and enterprise financing.
