‘People First’ approach for design and build firm

A WORKPLACE design and build firm is highlighting the need for a ‘people first’ approach to creating inspirational business environments that can boost culture, wellbeing and profitability.

Interaction, based in Bath, insists the days of focusing solely on efficiency – and maximum headcount – in office spaces is well and truly over, as smart technology blurs the boundaries between work and home.

Modern employees expect a positive workplace experience, while agile working has become the norm in many sectors.
Established in 1992, Interaction’s workplace consultancy team works closely with customers to tap into the DNA of a business and deliver projects that can affect positive change.

Deborah Wilder, Head of Research and Insight at Interaction, said: “Progressive employers recognise a positive work environment that inspires people to fulfil their potential is an astute investment, especially among those in highly competitive sectors for talent.

“But this approach calls for a good understanding of what workers need and what a business needs from its workers.

“This is where my team comes in, helping clients to shape the project brief so we can deliver the best solution possible.

Change management is one key area where Interaction’s team is supporting clients.

It worked with housing association Alliance Homes to plan improvements to its 18,000 sq ft head office in Portishead, Bristol.
The result was Alliance Homes’ former open-plan offices being completely re-worked into a montage of flexible, activity-based workspaces that offer a balance of collaborative areas, quiet cubby holes, and breakout spaces.

Nature was brought into the equation too, with an impressive floor-to-ceiling living wall feature in the lobby.

Other headline projects Interaction has been involved in include Manchester-based online retailer N Brown and nationwide legal firm TLT.

It is also working with the Diocese of Bath & Wells on its relocation from 12th century offices to a new fit-for-purpose modern space.
This includes detailed research into the kind of space, technology and furniture that can best support the organisation in the long term.

The aim is for the Diocese’s work environment to foster a healthy work/life balance as well as a culture of teamwork, drawing on the latest digital communication tools.

Dieter Wood, Managing Director of Interaction, said: “There’s no doubt that the type of space we occupy affects our behaviour and work performance.

“An office move or a workplace redesign presents employers with a huge opportunity.

“These projects can become the catalyst for profound, positive cultural change, which is a win-win situation for employees and the bottom-line alike.”
