As gig economy rideshare drivers step up to deliver food and supplies during COVID-19 crisis, Buckle responds with comprehensive protection for insured members

ATLANTA — May 6, 2020 — Buckle, a technology-driven financial services company, has been granted temporary approval to add insurance coverage to its rideshare driver members’ policies for the delivery of food, household supplies, and other packaged goods. Due to the COVID-19 crisis that has forced people to stay home in quarantine, many U.S. gig economy rideshare drivers have refocused to fill the increasing demand for the transportation of a wide range of packages. Buckle has responded to protect its insured members under these new conditions with added coverage at no additional cost.

“While the demand for rideshare services has dramatically dropped off due to COVID-19, rideshare drivers have stepped up to provide essential home delivery that many are relying on while in quarantine,” said Martin Young, co-founder and co-CEO of Buckle. “Buckle’s top priority is ensuring its members are fully covered in whatever capacity they are driving. We are thrilled to have secured approval from the Georgia Department of Insurance for members to now deliver goods and packages with the confidence of knowing they are covered during this national emergency.”

Earlier this year, Buckle introduced the first rideshare-only insurance that provides rideshare and Transportation Network Company (TNC) drivers with both personal and commercial coverage in one, affordable policy. Buckle currently provides cost-effective coverage to eligible Lyft drivers in Georgia whether their rideshare app is on or off, giving drivers peace of mind.

Rideshare drivers may think they are covered by their TNC under these new delivery conditions, but generally are not. This new provision allows Buckle members who have purchased a motor vehicle insurance policy to be covered while delivering for companies like Grubhub, Uber Eats, DoorDash, Amazon Flex, Postmates, and others.

Food and delivery coverage is now in effect for all current Buckle policies, including new or renewed policies, until further notice. No action is necessary for current Buckle members. In this fluid situation, the company is evaluating the status of its new delivery coverage on a weekly basis. Buckle is also working to make this a permanent addition to its offerings.
