Tree-mendous planting programme branches out into Millfields

780 trees have been planted on Council land in Millfields Park, in sessions led by the Tree Musketeers, Millfields Park User Group and Hackney Council. 

Formerly used by National Grid as part of their depot, the site, to the east of the southern section of Millfields Park, was returned to grassland last year, with trees added to improve the area’s character and biodiversity. 

Over 60 children from Rushmore Primary School joined the planting sessions, with a mix of willow and native woodland trees for coppicing, and a willow bank planted across the 1.5 acre stretch of land. 

The Council plants a variety of native and non-native species in order to future-proof its planting by building-in diversity and resilience to a changing climate. 

The trees were supplied by English Woodlands and The Willow Bank, as part of the Council’s ambitious Hackney-wide tree planting programme – which is helping to sequester carbon, filter air, mitigate local flooding by improving drainage, and cool streets during the hot weather that is becoming more prevalent as a result of climate change.
