Taking action on isolation for young carers

Young carers event 16 March

Wednesday 16 March Doncaster Council will be supporting the national annual campaign run by the Carers Trust, this year’s theme is ‘Taking action on isolation’ a great theme with added poignancy this year given the battles with Covid19.  There are over 700 children and young people providing care and support to family members in Doncaster.

Doncaster Council’s Young Carers Service supports Young Carers under the age of 19, who are supporting a family member who is ill, has a disability, mental illness or misusing a substance.  This could include a parent, sibling or close family member

Young carers don’t always realise that they are a young carer, if a child or young person is helping with medication, cooking, cleaning, or helping to dress a family member then they are a young carer.

It is vital that young carers are supported to look after their own health and wellbeing. Caring impacts on all aspects of a young carers life, relationships, health, school and many carers may feel lonely or isolated as it is not something that is widely talked about.

Doncaster’s young carers will be walking through Doncaster on 16 March starting at the Wool market at 4.30pm and ending in Sir Nigel Gresley Square, afterwards young carers will come together and enjoy refreshments at the CAST, the young carers team will be on hand to speak to provide information.

Lee Golze, Assistant Director of Localities and Early Intervention said “The Young Carers team run regular clubs where children and young people can safely talk about how they feel, meet other young carers, get support, advice and information as well as have some fun away from their caring responsibilities, thereby reducing the feeling of isolation. We are passionate about the support we provide to ensure that our young carers can access vital information that’s needed to support them now to ensure a happy and successful future.
