“Staff are our eyes and ears – we must always listen and learn” – NHS chief executive reflects on staff survey result – North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust

University Hospital of HartlepoolThe results of the annual NHS Staff Survey have been published – and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has reflected on the some of the feedback and themes raised.

This year the highest ever number of staff across the National Health Service completed this year’s survey.

Regionally, the Trust had the second highest response rate – with 92% of staff feeling they are trusted to do their job and 78% feeling safe in raising concerns about clinical practice.

The Trust is also equal to or higher than the national comparator in all areas of the survey – which this year followed the NHS People Promise to track progress against NHS England’s ambition to make the health service better.

Julie GillonJulie Gillon, chief executive, said: “The national staff survey helps us judge how our staff are feeling about their roles.

“They are our eyes and ears about how we are performing. We must always listen to everything they are telling us – both positive and negative – and respond to it.

“As we all know, the last two years have been incredibly challenging.

“Many staff have worked in different roles and under unprecedented demands in their lives, both in and out of the workplace. None of us are immune to this – it has impacted us all.

“In light of this, I am proud of the job we have all performed – right across the organisation – always putting patients first in the most trying of times.

“Staff feel trusted to do their jobs and feel safe in raising concerns – but we can do more.

“A significant amount of work has been going on to develop our culture, staff health and wellbeing, recruit and grow the workforce and innovate the care and treatment we give our patients – as well as so much more.

“Over the next few weeks, it is important we digest the data and findings and use it to improve things within the organisation. During this time we will be talking to staff about exactly how we can help, how we can grow, how we can continue improving.

“Learning from good practice and sharing this across the Trust is so important  – but so is learning from our mistakes and listening to staff about how we can improve.”

Other stand out figures for the Trust included:

  • Staff rated us 7.4 out of 10 for our compassion and inclusivity
  • Staff rated us 6.9 out of 10 for staff engagement
  • ‘We each have a voice that counts’ – 6.9 out of 10
  • ‘We are a team’ – 6.7 out of 10
