City College Norwich | HND Construction students visit Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing site
30th March 2022
Students on our HND in Construction and the Built Environment were given the chance to see a major bridge project in its early stages of construction when they visited the site of Great Yarmouth’s Third River Crossing.
The visit was hosted by BAM Farrans (a joint venture between BAM Nuttall and Farrans Construction), who were awarded the contract for the £120m project by Norfolk County Council.
For the students, who are all employed in the industry and seeking to develop their construction careers, the visit provided a unique opportunity to see and hear first-hand about the key stages of the landmark project.
Malcolm McAllister, Stakeholder Manager, talked the students through the project – from the establishment and clearance of the site to utilities diversions, marine and land pilings, through to the construction of the bascule chambers and assembly of the bridge sections.
The students also spent time looking at the work that has been completed so far at Fish Wharf and Bollard Quay.
The Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing will link the A47 to the port and the enterprise zone on the other side of the River Yare.
The bridge will ease traffic congestion on the town’s roads, as well as supporting wider plans to maximise investment, regeneration and economic growth opportunities in the borough.
