Children and young people have an egg-celent Easter at Healthy Holidays clubs

Our Healthy Holidays programme was a real success over the Easter holidays, with almost 4,000 spaces filled at holiday clubs in Barnsley.

We worked with a range of club providers who created 34 fantastic holiday clubs across the borough, where children could take part in activities from cookery and arts and crafts to gymnastics, team sports, and outdoor activities. The holiday clubs, free for children who receive benefit-related free school meals, also provided at least one delicious, nutritious meal at each session.

We got some fantastic feedback from the children and young people who visited the clubs over Easter. They loved all the different activities on offer, from “playing football” and “drawing and playing outside” to “meeting new friends.” One young person who visited one of the clubs loved that they could “come and be themselves.” There was also plenty of food on offer, with children telling us they loved the meals at the clubs and really enjoyed trying new things, too.

At Momentous Football Academy the kids had a great treat when football players from Barnsley FC came along to spend some time with them and help them train.

At Forge holiday clubs, the creepy crawlies were out in force as children got to meet lots of different bugs like millipedes, cockroaches, stick insects and more. They got to hold and feel them, and learned lots of interesting facts. Did you know that millipedes have between 40 and 400 legs?

There was also Cool Kids R Uz, where the children “had a blast”. They painted easter eggs, played in the park, and went on a day trip to Newmillerdam for a nature walk. To top it all off, they ended each day with a delicious hot cooked meal.

Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said: “Once again we’ve been really pleased to be able to offer Healthy Holidays clubs across the borough. It’s fantastic to be able to see all the different clubs on offer to support children over the holidays – from meeting footballers to fun Easter crafts, there were plenty of activities to excite everyone. We’re gearing up for our summer holidays programme, so keep an eye on our social media pages and on the Healthy Holidays webpage for more information.”
