Market stalls return to Goldthorpe

The traditional Goldthorpe Market is to return from June 13 offering a taste of what’s to come when the high street is transformed as part of the £23.1m Towns Fund investment.

From Monday June 13 until December, you will find a range of traders on the former Horse and Groom site from 9am to 3pm.

This site, bought by the council last year through Towns Fund investment, is due to be transformed into a new public plaza and events area as one of five major projects which will help regenerate, renew, and revitalise Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton upon Dearne.

This new plaza, when complete, will provide providing a central point for community activity as well as a space for pop-up events and market stalls.

Work is still ongoing to design the new plaza and further engagement with local people is continuing to help shape this new landmark space right at the heart of Goldthorpe.

However, we’re not waiting until then to make use of the space, and from June 13 until December there will be market stalls every Monday offering a range of goods including everyday essentials, second-hand goods, and items from local artists and makers.

Derek Bramham, chairperson of the Goldthorpe Town Deal Board, said: “It’s brilliant to be able to welcome market traders back to Goldthorpe every Monday from 13 June for the rest of this year.

“There are really exciting plans being prepared for this important site in the middle of Goldthorpe, and we’re expecting to see work start early next year.

“We’ve worked with the markets team to make good use of the site for the rest of this year bringing market traders back to our high street. We want the market to play an important role in the new public plaza on this site, so the Monday market will give us all a taste of what’s to come.

“I hope people will support our local economy and come along to visit our traders, as well as other local businesses in Goldthorpe.”
