Call for Bournemouth residents to host a young care leaver

Posted on Tuesday 21st November 2017

‘Room for One more?’ is the question being asked of local residents as part of a campaign to find local families willing to host and support a young care leaver in Bournemouth.

There are more than 200 young care leavers in Bournemouth who require help with the transition from care to independent living.

Supported Lodgings is one way in which a young care leaver can be supported with the help of a local family.

Supported Lodgings provides family-based accommodation and support for a young person aged 16-25 who cannot live with their own family and who are not ready for independent living.

There are different levels of support, including:

  • Standard supported lodgings
  • Enhanced supported lodgings
  • Supported lodgings for Separated Young People Seeking Asylum

Councillor Nicola Greene, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: “Providing supported lodgings for a young care leaver can have a positive and life changing impact on a young person. Leaving care can be a daunting prospect for a care leaver, but with the help of a local family, they can become more independent and grow in confidence. I would urge local residents who think they may be able to provide a place in their home and offer a care leaver a safe and supportive environment to contact us and find out more information.”

Supported Lodgings Carers are provided with full training and support as well as financial assistance.
