Civic reception for Italy’s national rugby squad
A civic reception is being held at Liverpool Town Hall on Monday 17 October for Italy’s Rugby League World Cup squad, who are staying in the city during the tournament.
The Rugby League World Cup 2021 is taking place from 15 October until 19 November 2022, with the Italy team training in St Helens.
During their time in Liverpool City Region, they will also be inspiring local children to take up sport by visiting schools.
At the event on Monday, a plaque will be presented to the Chairman of the Italian Rugby League, Orazio D’Arro, by Lord Mayor, Cllr Roy Gladden – who played rugby for 20 years and went on to be a referee until he retired. In return, the Lord Mayor will be presented with a jumper signed by the Italy squad.
The Rugby League World Cup 2021 was meant to take place last year, but was postponed as some teams were unable to take part due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Lord Mayor, Cllr Roy Gladden, said: “I am delighted to welcome the Italian Rugby World Cup squad to Liverpool Town Hall.
“It is fantastic that they are staying in Liverpool during the tournament and I hope they get some time to enjoy our amazing city during their time here.
“As an ex-rugby player who has also followed the game for a great many years, and who appreciates the skill and hard work involved, I am pleased to be given the opportunity to wish them every success.”
Chairman of the Italian Rugby League, Orazio D’Arro, said: “We are extremely grateful for the reception we’ve had already while here in Liverpool and thank Lord Mayor, Cllr Roy Gladden, for the generous hospitality extended to Team Italia. There’s no better place than Liverpool, for us to prepare for the challenges we have before us.
“The team and staff are looking forward to the Civic Reception on Monday, following our first match against Scotland. We are hoping it will be a joyful and memorable gathering, connecting with those responsible for bringing this all together over the past five years”.
