Deion Sanders to Leave Jackson State for $5M in Colorado Payday

  • ESPN reports that Deion Sanders will be leaving Jackson State as the head coach after three years.
  • CBS reported that Sanders will join Colorado Buffaloes for an approximately 40% increase in pay.
  • The opinions of football fans aren’t always the same.

Deion Sanders is reported to be preparing to leave Jackson State, just three seasons into his college football coaching career. Opinions are divided on his possible move to the University of Colorado.

Sources say Sanders and others close to him have been “making inquiries at both potential members of his Colorado on-field staff” ESPN reported. Sanders’ salary at Colorado would start at over $5 million per year — a nearly 40% pay raise, according to CBS News

According to ESPN, Sanders’ possible departure was reported Friday night before Jackson State’s Southwestern Athletic Conference title match against Southern University on Saturday.

Sanders’ departure from SWAC (a conference comprised of HBCU athletic teams) was met with mixed reactions from college football fans. Sanders was often praised for bringing the conference more mainstream attention in his three seasons as the Tigers’ coach.

Some criticised the former NFL star for using Jackson State “a launching platform for his coaching career”, while others congratulated the new Power 5 position.

This unofficial news has raised questions about recruiting after a source revealed to ESPN that Sanders encouraged a “prominent player in NCAA transfer portal” to wait for his move from Colorado before committing.

Similar concerns have been raised regarding Sanders’ son, Jackson State’s quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who could follow his father to Colorado. Sanders did not deny that Sanders could bring his son to another school in the past.

Under his leadership, they have been undefeated in 2022 and Sanders won the SWAC Coach-of-the Year award in 2021 and 2022. according to BET.

If he is hired, he will replace Karl Dorrell as Buffaloes’ head coaching coach. Dorrell was a losing coach for three years, with an 8-15 record.

According to CBS, Dorrell was fired by Colorado in October. CBS reports that Dorrell will be bought out of his contract for $8.7 million.

Sanders is believed to be making an announcement about his alleged departure form Jackson State after Saturday’s match.

ESPN sources said that “They weren’t hiding anything.” “It seemed like it had been a done deal.”
