Take a Tour of the New Electric SUV

Rivian finally delivered the SUV to customers, after months of delays.

It was very comfortable, versatile, and spacious. The R1S is packed with many amazing features.

The R1S Launch Edition (the first model out and the one I tested) has all-wheel drive by way of four motors — one powering each wheel.

It promises an impressive 835 horsepower, and 908 pound feet of torque. This makes it much faster and more agile that its size suggests.

The SUV shines off-road too. There are several driving modes that allow you to adjust the suspension, throttle and ground clearance for different types terrain.

Set the R1S to Rock Crawl or All Terrain mode and jack up its ground clearance to the max — 15 inches — and the R1S makes light work of treacherous boulders, water crossings, and impossibly steep grades.

Most owners won’t push the limits on their R1S very often. The SUV excels at everyday tasks.

For large adults, the way-back can be a bit tight. However, it can be used in a pinch if your move to the second row.

The interior feels spacious and open thanks to the R1S’s large sunroofs.

It feels solidly built and high-end. The Launch Edition features stylish gray wood trim on the doors and dash.

It can be annoying to not have buttons or tabs to control the air vents. The user interface is beautiful and easy to use.

The cabin is filled with USB-C ports and little storage cubbies, so there’s always a place for your phone to be charged or a place to put it.
