How to recover an Excel file that has been lost

  • Microsoft Excel includes many features to help you recover spreadsheets that have been saved but not saved and prevent data from being lost.
  • Excel may close before you save a file. If this happens, you will see a tab called Document Recovery when you attempt to open the last saved version. 
  • If you have never saved the file before Excel was closed, click Recover Unsaved Worksbooks at the bottom.

There is no pain like the sting of losing hours of your work due to a software crash or power outage.

How to recover an Excel file saved with unsaved work

If Excel closes before you’ve had a chance to save the most recent changes to your file — but the workbook has already been saved at least once — the program makes it easy to recover that lost work. 

1.Start Excel Click the button in the pane to the left. Open

2.Select the file that you were working on but didn’t have the chance to save before losing your work.

3.In most cases you should see the Document RecoveryPane to the left It displays all files that were open at the time of the crash. You can choose the file that you want, and then save it for future reference.

The Document Recovery pane can be used to recover work from Excel crashes or shuts down unexpectedly.

How to recover an Excel file that has not been saved

Excel saves your work frequently in the background. It allows you to recover the most recent version of the work if Excel closes, even if it hasn’t been saved before. 

1.Start Excel Click the button in the pane to the left. Open

2.Click the button at the bottom right. Recover Lost Workbooks.

3.Select the unsaved file from our list of unsaved workbooks.

To recover lost work, use the Recover Unsaved Workbooks command from the Open File window.

How to use Excel to recover files not saved

Excel will automatically recover files that have not been saved if the settings are correct.

1.In ExcelClick here File Click the button in the pane to the left. Options

2.In the Excel OptionsClick on window Save

3.Make sure you Every time you save AutoRecover informationYou have been checked. You can set the timer to whatever is most comfortable for you, such as 5Or 10

Excel’s AutoRecover function should be enabled to ensure that you don’t lose work in case of a crash.

How to back up an Excel spreadsheet

You can set Excel to automatically create a backup of your spreadsheet every time you save it. This will give you additional security. This saves the most recent version of your spreadsheet before saving the latest changes. This allows you to “roll back” to older versions. 

1.In ExcelClick the following button while you have the file open that needs to be backed up. File Click the button. Save asOr Save a Copy.  

2.Click Browse To open the Save as dialog box. 

3.Other than the Save And Cancel Click the buttons Tools Then, choose General OptionsFrom the dropdown menu. 

4.Click the checkbox beside Always keep backupsThen click OK

You can enable Always create a backup from the Tools menu. This will preserve the previous version each time you save your spreadsheet.

Every time you save another copy of this spreadsheet you’ll find a backup saved in the same folder.
