What Citi Flex Pay Program gets you
Citi Flex Pay will charge your card the full price of American Airlines flights when you use Citi Flex Pay. The total cost will be subtracted from the credit available to your card. You don’t have to pay the entire monthly payment amount each billing cycle, but you can rest assured.
Citi Flex Pay charges no interest and you will still be charged interest. However, the fixed rate of Citi Flex Pay is lower than your card’s APR. It’s best to pay as soon as possible to reduce the interest payments.
Citi Flex Pay allows you to still earn points or miles
Large purchases made using the Flex Pay program can still be eligible for American Airlines Loyalty Points, redeemable miles, and other perks. However, this is limited to the original purchase. You will not earn rewards for interest payments.
For example, if a $500 purchase is made and you choose to pay it off in a 24-month time period, you will still only get the original 1,000 points, even though you paid $500 plus any additional interest.
Citi Flex Pay – How to pay your flight
Citi/AAdvantage cardholders have the option to choose Flex Pay at checkout on aa.com, or through the American Airlines App. Flex Pay can only be used if your flight cost is at least $75.
After you have selected Flex Pay, select your Citi/AAdvantage eligible credit card as your payment method and then choose the length of time you prefer.
Instead, you might consider a 0% intro rate offer
If you’re able, consider applying for a card with a longer 0% interest rate. You can charge the entire price of your flight to the card without accruing interest. But you will need to pay off your balance in time before your 0% offer expires.
There are some Citi cards that have incredibly long intro APRs that might be worth looking at:
- Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card: 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 21 months (transfers must be completed within 4 months of account opening) and on purchases for 12 months (then a 16.74% – 27.49% Variable APR)
- Citi Simplicity® Card: 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 21 months (transfers must be completed within 4 months of account opening) and on purchases for 12 months (then a 17.74% – 28.49% Variable APR)
- Citi Custom Cash℠ Card0% Intro APR on Balance Transfers and Purchases for 15 Months (then a 17.74%-27.74% Variable APr).
Citi/AAdvantage card purchases don’t come with a 0% intro rate. A Citi/AAdvantage card can be used by a different issuer, or a Citi credit card that is not co-branded with American Airlines, but you will not be able earn Loyalty Points or AAdvantage points from the card.
