Jess Galica stated that she has received a variety “gold stars” throughout her career. Prominent companies like Bain and Apple were on her résumé, along with an MBA from MIT. Despite this, she wasn’t certain she was on a good career track.

“It was one these wake-up moments, where I thought, “Why does this still not feel right after I’ve reached summit in the eyes so many people?” She agreed.

Galica and her employees are redefining what a dream career is by weighing factors such as work-life balance finding meaning in their rolesbrand-name recognition. Because many employees are aware of the brand. are speaking up about being burnt outFearful or frightened of layoffs after cuts at prominent companies like Twitter, Meta, and Amazon — likely “dream” destinations for many people. Galica stated that they are currently looking into what their “dream” job or title is to help them find the right role to propel their careers forward in today’s competitive environment. 

She stated, “Get curious about what your dream job was to do at, insert that company.” She suggested that you consider whether you are attracted to the innovative work environment, the possibility of opening doors, or the attractive pay and benefits. These underlying factors will open many more doors, she said.

Here are her top tips to help you find and land your dream job today. 

First, imagine your dream life

Galica says that the first step to finding your dream job is to change your mindset. 

She stated that “the biggest mindset shift is for people to move away from focusing solely on finding a dream job, and instead focus on creating a vision of a life they love.” 

She suggested that you look at three main themes when imagining an idyllic future. These are lifestyle aspirations and financial goals. These factors will help you narrow down your career options.

Galica suggested that working parents might have to choose a flexible and hybrid work model. Others may be more focused on policies that provide paid time off to allow them to travel. Galica stated, “Once you have determined your nonnegotiables for your life, only apply to jobs which will align with them.”

Then, look for peer references

Galica stated that once you have started looking for roles and companies that can help you achieve your future goals, it is a good idea to talk with people who have worked or are currently working for the companies. You can gain a better understanding of the company culture, the workload and any other questions.

Galica stated that you should start with your own network and people you know. This will allow you to ask the difficult questions that might be difficult to pose to a hiring manager.

Tell your story to land the job

The two shared their belief that storytelling will help you standout when interviewing for dream jobs. 

She explained that there are subtle storytelling options you can make to improve your position as a candidate. It’s not enough to say you want flexibility, it’s enough to say you prefer autonomy in your job. 

“There’s always a way to take what you’re looking for and make it a competitive advantage,” and that’s a key to getting the dream job, Galica said.
