George Santos’s Attorney Issues a Statement Regarding Incorrect Churchill Quote
- George Santos, a Long Island Republican, has been accused in his biography of fabricating it.
- Monday night’s statement from Santos included Winston Churchill.
- But the quote — on the importance of creating enemies — is not from the British prime minister.
George Santos (a Republican from Long Island) told voters he was a Goldman Sachs employee and had attended Baruch College. After he was elected, he claimed that he had lost four employees to the Pulse Nightclub massacre in 2016.
According to the report, none of this appears to be true. an investigationThe New York Times found that Santos’s claimed educators and employers had no record of him.
Santos, openly gay and Brazilian-born, has not refuted any claims made by the Times, nor did he respond on an Insider’s request for comment. Rather, in a statement posted on social media Monday night, the Santos camp is appealing to partisanship and right-wing distrust of The Times — and using a fake quote from Winston Churchill to make the point.

Joseph Murray, Santos’s lawyer, wrote the statement, which asserts that the election of a conservative gay Latino would threaten “the Left”. Accordingly, “It’s not surprising that Congressman-elect Santos has enemies in the New York Times who are trying to smear him good name with these defamatory accusations.”
It continues to quote Winston Churchill, the former Conservative UK prime minster who led Britain during World War II. Good. It means you have stood up for something at some point in your life.
Churchill never famously stated the quote attributed him.
PolitiFact noted in 2019, the quote attributed to Churchill — which went viral on a Facebook meme — is actually a rough paraphrase of Victor Hugo, the French playwright, from an essay he wrote a century before the Nazis were defeated. The International Churchill Society representative told the fact-checking site that Churchill never said it.
