Amazingly Silly, but Extremely Entertaining

• GMC has revived the Hummer as an electric pickup truck — and I got to drive it. 
• The Hummer EV Edition 1 is outrageously expensive at $113,000 
• The Hummer is also fun because of its fast acceleration, removable top and sheer absurdity.  

GMC’s electric Hummer, a whole new kind of electric vehicle. It’s not as sleek and sporty as a Tesla, and it’s not as compact and cost-effective. Chevy Bolt. Even though it’s a pickup truck it isn’t designed for the job site as a. Ford F-150 Lightning. 

The Hummer EV is a hybrid of a heavy-duty diesel truck and a boxy Mercedes G-Wagen. It’s bold, loud, and extreme for the sheer joy of it. 

A weekend with the $113,000 behemoth proved it’s one of the silliest vehicles on the market — electric or otherwise. I’d lie if i said it wasn’t a blast. 

It’s insanely large

The Hummer is enormous, it’s no surprise. It’s a freaking Hummer. But it’s tough to truly grasp the enormity until you see one in person — or better yet, get behind the wheel. (The Hummer measures nearly eight feet in width and 18 feet in length.

I exhaled a sigh, relieved to have made it out of New York City’s cramped streets and found myself on the highway, where the monster would have plenty more room. Or so I thought. The Hummer’s small dimensions and numerous blind spots made me nervous every time I drove it. I was constantly afraid I was taking up too much space and was about to crash another car. 

The Hummer is difficult to miss, and other drivers were kind enough to give me space when I needed. One backed up to let me squeeze my obnoxious vehicle through the gate of a quaint farmers market — a maneuver that would’ve required no extra fuss in a normal car.

I can’t imagine doing the same. To me, if you drive an over-sized truck for daily errands then you are responsible. 

But lots of fun!

The Hummer EV is a big toy. Its hulking size — plus oodles of other cool features — made it endlessly entertaining to live with. At most, for a weekend. 

I found myself driving around in a Hummer EV, towering over all other cars. I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it. This feeling is magnified when the truck’s roof panels are removed and it transforms into a massive truck. Convertible truck. A Hummer was a great Hummer for cruising around with friends. 

It also moves faster than you would expect from a truck weighing in at 9,000 lbs. The Hummer accelerates instantly when you press the throttle, leaning back like an speedboat and then accelerating to 40 mph.

Four-wheel steering is available, which makes it possible to maneuver in tight spaces and allows the Hummer to use its most bizarre feature, Crab Walk. If you switch on this mode, all four wheels will turn in the same direction when the steering wheel is turned. This allows you drive in a zigzag, without actually turning. My friends laughed at me, but I thought it was quite cool. 

Then there are the little things, which bring a smile onto your face.

The Hummer’s windshield has three small wipers, instead of the two regular ones. This is why I laughed out loud when I first saw it. You can scroll through the Hummer’s drive modes to see incredible animations showing the truck moving through different environments, such as Mars or the Moon. 

Would I buy a Hummer Electric Vehicle? Nope. It’s just too big. But the Hummer’s outlandishness was much more than I expected. I would happily live the Hummer life again for a weekend.
