Thumbs-up for DiagNodus as company receives highly competitive Innovate UK grant

DiagNodus Ltd, a Cambridge biomedical company based at Babraham Research Campus, has received a prestigious grant from Innovate UK to help it develop a radical new test for Covid-19 using anal swabs. DiagNodus expects its new test to be more accurate than the model currently in use, which is based on collecting material from the nose and throat.

Dr. Alex Loktionov, CEO and Scientific Director of DiagNodus, commented: “recent peer-reviewed studies (https://doi.org/10.1053/j.gastro.2020.03.065) have shown that the virus remains in the bowel for longer than it does elsewhere in the body. Therefore, if we develop a test that spots it in bowel material, using our already proven diagnostic approach, we can trace the disease in patients who might otherwise have tested negative, but are in fact carriers of Covid-19. This can also protect from infection medical professionals performing gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures, and I am delighted that Innovate UK will be helping us take this project forward”.

The recent funding boost is the latest in a series of positive developments for DiagNodus. Earlier this year, the company’s innovative research on detecting bowel cancer was featured in the British Journal of Cancer, one of the world’s top medical publications (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41416-020-0893-8). The company has also launched an ambitious strategic partnership with St. George’s Hospital, a leading London NHS trust, as well as strengthening its Board with a new director tasked with commercialising its products and drawing in investment. This builds on an impressive track record in recent years, which have seen the company gain two granted patents, while the European Commission has recognised the work of DiagNodus with a prestigious Seal of Excellence. Health management company eNano Health develop a saliva test that could help the UK lift the lockdown


Biomedical science company, eNano Health, have developed their unique test swab previously been used for viral infections such as SARs and MERS, in a response to the global pandemic. Temporary Space Company ootBox Raises $900k Seed Funding Round


ootBox, a company that builds and leases temporary spaces manufactured from cargo containers, announced that it raised $870,000 in seed funding. This seed stage equity round was led by venture capital firm i-Hatch Ventures, with participation from Bolt Ventures and Island Capital. This funding will accelerate ootBox’s production in Columbus, Ohio and help further scale the product.

“ootBox’s focus is to create temporary space that is both beautiful and flexible,” said Robbie Friedman, cofounder and Chief Executive Officer of ootBox. “With everything that is going on in the world today, the ability to deploy space wherever it’s needed, without sacrificing anything in terms of comfort, natural light and design is more important than ever.”

An acronym for “out of the box”, ootBoxes have been used for everything from temporary home offices, to hospitals, retail experiences and development sites, thanks to the small footprint and customization opportunities.

“Our leasing and plug and play approach approach fits perfectly with the unknowns facing the world of real estate right now,” said cofounder Allison Zofan.

Designed using custom 10-foot cargo containers and punctuated by tempered glass on two sides, an ootBox arrives on a flatbed truck, plugs in to a standard outdoor outlet and is available for short-term leasing.

Tuition Company to help fund education for vulnerable children in Brazil


Maidstone based tuition company to fund education for children in Brazil.

Vulnerable children often not accessing school in Brazil are to receive additional support with life changing education and mentoring thanks to a new scheme run by Maidstone company Outreach Tuition.   Outreach Tuition support vulnerable children and disadvantaged young people within Kent and South London. For every new pupil referred to them by primary and secondary schools, local authorities and alternative settings, Outreach Tuition will in turn, fund the education of a child in Brazil.

Outreach Tuition, run by Jodie Devlin, is to help support education through the charity Meninadanca.  Meninadanca works with around 300 children and young people every day, in some of the poorest communities along Brazil’s main highway where they are often exploited by their families. The charity’s Pink Houses provide a safe haven where they can learn to flourish through a mix of programmes to help empower and educate themselves. Through a mix of dance, art and education, the charity helps them to overcome their past, erase fear and build a meaningful future. Meninadance also works with families within these vulnerable areas to educate them on the value of their children within the community.

Jodie Devlin, Director of Outreach Tuition says “School leaders in London and the South East can really feel as though they are making a difference now when they refer pupils to us. In addition to receiving our life changing home tuition for the vulnerable pupils in their own schools, they equally will be lifting up a deprived area of Brazil. The Startup Men’s Skincare Company That’s Changing the Game


These days, skincare companies are a dime a dozen. And with each of them competing for your attention on Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media outlets, it can be a little overwhelming. So how can you separate the legitimate from the gimmicks? We talked to one new Los Angeles-based skincare company to find out.

“It’s about the ingredients,” says Raffi, a co-founder and CEO of the company. “If you take a look at the ingredient list on most products, you’ll see all sorts of crazy ingredients from sheep placenta to horse fat.” But you won’t find these gimmicks in Baker Rye’s products. “Most of those ingredients are included for marketing purposes only,” he says. “They’re added in low quantities just so that a manufacturer can throw it on the label. At best they’re doing nothing. At worst, they’re harmful to your skin, or byproducts of inhumane animal testing.”

And that’s where Baker Rye is different. “We only include what we need, and we only include the best ingredients,” the CEO says. It’s all part of an emerging market of clean skincare—skincare without parabens or other harsh chemical preservatives. It’s under this banner that companies like Baker Rye are changing the game.

The one ingredient that Raffi does buy into? “Hyaluronic acid,” he says emphatically. Seen by some as the holy grail of skincare, hyaluronic acid is a natural acid the body produces to keep skin cells hydrated. “Hydrated skin cells are happy skin cells,” Raffi goes on. “Think of your skin cells like water balloons. The more full they are, the less wrinkling you’ll see. It’s really that simple.”

It’s this no-nonsense type of attitude that seems to have propelled Baker Rye’s successes so far. “We’re not here to sell you a fad that will be a part of your skincare routine for a week or a month, tops. We’re designing the highest quality skincare for men. Quality doesn’t go out of style.”
