The Devon company at the forefront of Covid-19 testing

In May this year, the MHRA instructed laboratories supplying COVID-19 Finger-prick Antibody tests to pause testing whilst further validation tests were carried out on the method. Whilst Blue Horizon agreed to pause testing, this caused problems for many home users who could not readily find a nurse to take blood with a venous blood draw, or were unwilling to risk the extra social contact this would have entailed.

Blue Horizon are now able to offer a new quantitative finger-prick test, representing a premium SARS-CoV-2 assay. This tests the strength of immune reaction of both IgG and IgM antibodies, giving each a numeric value and was developed by Professor Sebastian Johnston, Dr Michael Edwards and their team at Virtus Respiratory Research Ltd who have not only verified the accuracy of finger-prick capillary vs venous samples to be 100% but have also acquired CE marking for their kit and their test as a whole, thereby following the relevant guidance.

“Whilst we had no doubt about the accuracy of finger-prick blood samples before, our partnership with Virtus enables us to offer finger-prick coronavirus antibody testing again”. Says Dr Johnson of Blue Horizon Blood Tests, “This enables us to supply home and workplace users with COVID-19 Antibody test kits without the requirement of a nurse to acquire the sample.”

Professor Johnston, of Virtus, states “This COVID-19 test uses the S1 Spike Protein instead of the more widely used nucleoprotein – we would therefore expect 10-15% of users that may have tested negative on a nucleoprotein based test to test positive on ours”. He goes on to say that “because it tests both IgG and IgM antibodies we would expect a significant proportion of people who might or did test negative on an IgG only test to be IgM positive on this test – any antibody positive test to this virus is a sign of a memory immune response to the virus, which is bound to be a good thing”. – indeed it is Professor Sebastian Johnston’s firm belief, based on previous literature with seasonal coronavirus infections and his 30+ years of experience researching respiratory virus infections, that presence of a memory immune response to this virus is clear evidence of a significant degree of protection from the virus on future exposure.

The test is available now through Blue Horizon blood tests Covid-19 Finger-prick antibody test for home use

Award-winning Cambridge company to pioneer radical new Covid-19 test

Thumbs-up for DiagNodus as company receives highly competitive Innovate UK grant

DiagNodus Ltd, a Cambridge biomedical company based at Babraham Research Campus, has received a prestigious grant from Innovate UK to help it develop a radical new test for Covid-19 using anal swabs. DiagNodus expects its new test to be more accurate than the model currently in use, which is based on collecting material from the nose and throat.

Dr. Alex Loktionov, CEO and Scientific Director of DiagNodus, commented: “recent peer-reviewed studies (https://doi.org/10.1053/j.gastro.2020.03.065) have shown that the virus remains in the bowel for longer than it does elsewhere in the body. Therefore, if we develop a test that spots it in bowel material, using our already proven diagnostic approach, we can trace the disease in patients who might otherwise have tested negative, but are in fact carriers of Covid-19. This can also protect from infection medical professionals performing gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures, and I am delighted that Innovate UK will be helping us take this project forward”.

Hard at work: A DiagNodus scientist doing her bit in the battle against Covid-19

The recent funding boost is the latest in a series of positive developments for DiagNodus. Earlier this year, the company’s innovative research on detecting bowel cancer was featured in the British Journal of Cancer, one of the world’s top medical publications (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41416-020-0893-8). The company has also launched an ambitious strategic partnership with St. George’s Hospital, a leading London NHS trust, as well as strengthening its Board with a new director tasked with commercialising its products and drawing in investment. This builds on an impressive track record in recent years, which have seen the company gain two granted patents, while the European Commission has recognised the work of DiagNodus with a prestigious Seal of Excellence. DiagNodus will announce a major fundraising round in the coming weeks.

Health management company eNano Health develop a saliva test that could help the UK lift the lockdown

Biomedical science company, eNano Health, have developed their unique test swab previously been used for viral infections such as SARs and MERS, in a response to the global pandemic. Unlike the current tests that look for antibodies or antigens, the saliva swabs measure changes that are present in the immune system, up to three days before symptoms even develop.

Bringing over 10 years of experience in monitoring illnesses and contagious viruses such as SARS, their non-invasive screening procedures that will meet the huge demand for rapid, regular testing during the Coronavirus pandemic. And with the news of several pubs having to close again shortly after re-opening for two days, the importance of testing to help control the virus and prevent further lockdowns is crucial.

Executive of the subsidiary company, eNano Health Europe, Peter Chan, says: ”Using eNano’s specific experience handling previous pandemics and outbreaks for countries in the Far East, we’re able to apply their extensive knowledge and experience to the current Coronavirus pandemic here in the UK. We’re confident the saliva swab is a cost-effective solution which will modernise the way in which the UK handles many other contagious viruses, moving forward.”

eNano Investor Tweedie Brown CBE adds; “Our main focus has always been to introduce a health management system in Europe. It so happened a pandemic broke out, and so we are able to offer an experienced pair of eyes offer assistance”.

As a localised lockdown is imposed on Leicester and some pubs swiftly shut again due to outbreaks, the saliva swabs would provide an effective solution to offering widespread testing quickly and efficiently. eNano Health’s swab could help instil confidence and help people get back to working and business reopening safely. The saliva swabs offer a cost-effective and easy to use solution that is scalable to supply the national coverage needed.

The swab tests already meet ISO 13485 standard and are now awaiting FDA, MHRA and CE accreditation for launch in Europe. Once granted, the next version of the test will change colour if a virus is present in the immune system- with or without symptoms being present.

These tests will not only significantly reduce the risk of false-negative results but also helps those who may have a virus such as Coronavirus but is asymptomatic, helping prevent the potential second wave. Further development means the swab will have a pregnancy test-style colour change, sharing results in a matter of minutes.

eNano Health and eNano Health Europe are now in discussion with leading Universities in the UK to start clinical trials for further sample pools for lab trials to process swabs before an official launch of the non-invasive home test kit alongside an accompanying app.

If you’ve had previous symptoms or want to put your pub or restaurant forward to take part in our lab trials, please email us on info@enanohealtheurope.com.

eNano Health Europe is also in discussions with a pilot scheme to open up one of London’s most popular tourist spots, Chinatown, safely using their saliva test kits allowing customers to visit restaurants.

SUMMUS SOLUTIONS N.V. (“SS.H”) RUMOURED TO DOUBLE THEIR STAKE IN FUTURE UNICORN START-UP COMPANY IONOTERRA LIMITED

Rumours continue to circulate on Wall Street that Vancouver based entrepreneurial private equity firm Summus Solutions N.V. will be doubling their stake in Israeli start up, Ionoterra Limited.

Summus Solutions N.V., listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange under symbol SS.H, – as per the 31st December 2019 filings – already owned 11% of Ionoterra Inc. and with Ionoterra hitting the headlines of late, with talks that they are planning to do a Proof of Concept in California and are about to sign a number of multimillion-dollar contracts with a number of governments around the world, Summus Solutions N.V. vying to increase their equity stake in Ionoterra Ltd., who can blame them? Ionoterra Ltd. is considered to be hot property on Wall Street right now with most firms laying odds on bets that Ionoterra Inc. are on the verge of hitting the big time.  If you’re looking for the next potential Unicorn company as an addition to your portfolio, look no further than Ionoterra Ltd.

Although unconfirmed, there are whispers circulating that Ionoterra Ltd. has recently turned down a host of sizeable investment offers from big name private equity investors such as The Carlyle Group, CVC Capital Partners and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. Doran Angelovitch, CEO of Ionoterra Ltd. said; “When we started out, we approached a number of private equity firms in the hope they would assist us in realising our dream of implementing our exclusive patented technology which we knew would give citizens of our planet, eight hours warning before a devastating earthquake was about to strike their region. Almost all of the firms we approached did not believe in us. It was only Summus Solutions N.V. who showed faith in us in the beginning and supported us financially, allowing us the time and the resources we needed to achieve proof of concept. Of course, now our technology has actually been proven, and we have very real interest from many governments as well as the United Nations to deploy our technology worldwide, we have received many offers from those same private equity firms who turned us down initially. We shall continue to achieve our goals and aspirations in partnership with Summus Solutions N.V.”

Urs Meisterhans, President and CEO of Summus Solutions N.V. was unavailable for comment at this time, but should Summus Solutions N.V. increase their stake in Ionoterra Ltd., their share price will skyrocket giving joy to all shareholders in Summus Solutions N.V.

The Startup Men’s Skincare Company That’s Changing the Game

These days, skincare companies are a dime a dozen. And with each of them competing for your attention on Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media outlets, it can be a little overwhelming. So how can you separate the legitimate from the gimmicks? We talked to one new Los Angeles-based skincare company to find out.

Nestled in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles is the latest and greatest from the men’s skincare game: Baker Rye Co. Founded by two California natives with a passion for self-care, Baker Rye is a step above the rest.

From the outset, it’s clear that Baker Rye is selling a high end product. The company’s “skincare starter pack” comes in a luxurious black box with gold lettering. Unboxing it is reminiscent of unboxing an iPad. Each of the products within the set comes in stylish brown glass with black lids. It’s a product set that any man would feel confident having on his bathroom counter. But the packaging isn’t the only thing that Baker Rye excels at.

“It’s about the ingredients,” says Raffi, a co-founder and CEO of the company. “If you take a look at the ingredient list on most products, you’ll see all sorts of crazy ingredients from sheep placenta to horse fat.” But you won’t find these gimmicks in Baker Rye’s products. “Most of those ingredients are included for marketing purposes only,” he says. “They’re added in low quantities just so that a manufacturer can throw it on the label. At best they’re doing nothing. At worst, they’re harmful to your skin, or byproducts of inhumane animal testing.”

And that’s where Baker Rye is different. “We only include what we need, and we only include the best ingredients,” the CEO says. It’s all part of an emerging market of clean skincare—skincare without parabens or other harsh chemical preservatives. It’s under this banner that companies like Baker Rye are changing the game.

The one ingredient that Raffi does buy into? “Hyaluronic acid,” he says emphatically. Seen by some as the holy grail of skincare, hyaluronic acid is a natural acid the body produces to keep skin cells hydrated. “Hydrated skin cells are happy skin cells,” Raffi goes on. “Think of your skin cells like water balloons. The more full they are, the less wrinkling you’ll see. It’s really that simple.”

It’s this no-nonsense type of attitude that seems to have propelled Baker Rye’s successes so far. “We’re not here to sell you a fad that will be a part of your skincare routine for a week or a month, tops. We’re designing the highest quality skincare for men. Quality doesn’t go out of style.”
