No matter what your business does, or how long it’s been up and running for, you will have at some point collected some kind of data. If you have collected data, then you will want to make sure that you look after it properly. At the minimum you should let the customer know how and why you have collected their data, provide an opportunity to opt-in (or opt-out), tell them if there is a breach and a method to permanently remove themselves should they wish to opt-out. Your customer has every right over the data that they provide you with, but it is your duty to manage it properly and protect it.
Focus on the Data You Have
There’s no point worrying about something that you don’t have. You need to be able to use the data that you have and focus on building a data infrastructure that optimises the ability for your business to make an informed decision on what it needs to do. You need to make sure that you have the ability to work the data that you already have.
If you use multiple platforms, then it’s a good idea to sync up all your contact information using a system like PieSync, as this way you can make sure that you have all relevant information in front of you, on one device. This will save you time, as you won’t have to worry about finding the relevant information on different platforms.
Understand Your Data
If you don’t know what your data can be used for, then you won’t get anywhere in the business world. The reason you collect data is to be able to make an informed business decision to help your business progress. Having a good understanding of your customers’ data can be extremely beneficial in helping you sort out your marketing schemes and increase your sales. Without your customers’ data you won’t be able to make the right decision at all about what needs to be orders, what your budget is etc…
Back Up Your Data
You will have hopefully realised by now, that your data is important. Which is why you need to make sure that you back it up regularly. If you don’t back it up, then you might lose it at some point. This is not something that you want to happen. Apparently about 60% of SMBs that lose their data end up closing six months later. It is not something that you want to happen. It’s very easy to back up your data so you should make sure that you do it regularly.
