The Odyssey cast workplace lessons that emerged from Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster press tour range from the mundane to the genuinely instructive: carry your own kit, endure your share of discomfort, and hand credit to the person who actually earned it.
The film, which IMDb records as running 173 minutes and has accumulated an approximate worldwide gross of $946.5 million, drew on a cast assembled across six countries over a 91-day, six-month shoot. NBC Insider reports that production spanned Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States, using a new 70mm IMAX camera system.

Nolan set the tone before a single frame was shot. Despite having every justification for a helicopter to the set, he made the same 1,000-foot daily hike as the rest of the crew. In a joint People interview on 16 July, Tom Holland recalled the decision; Nolan himself explained that his wife and producer, Emma Thomas, had put a stop to any alternative.
‘I tried, but Emma would not let me. She’s like, “You have to walk up the hill. If you’re going to ask people to walk up the hill, you better be walking up,”‘ Nolan said.
Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, learnt a sharper lesson on his very first day. In a Today interview on 14 July, he recalled arriving at the Greek set after a 25-minute hike, only to watch his wardrobe assistant Corey arrive carrying Damon’s armour.
‘Everyone started coming up, and everyone was wearing their armor. And then I saw Corey, the guy who was handling my wardrobe, carrying my armor, and I felt so horrible,’ Damon said. He apologised immediately. ‘That never happened again. That was embarrassing,’ he added.
Jon Bernthal’s Moment in the Water
The episode that most shaped the cast’s collective standards came early in production in Morocco, where the Motion Picture Association confirms Jon Bernthal plays Menelaus. Damon told People in an interview published on 17 July that Bernthal was half-submerged in icy water during a winter scene inside the Trojan Horse, shaking and pressing his hands together to suppress the shivers long enough to deliver a single line of dialogue. Production had begun in Morocco in February 2025, according to Outside Online.
Nolan checked on Bernthal repeatedly, but the actor waved him on. ‘Jon was just like, “Just go, just go,”‘ Damon recalled.
‘That set the tone for the cast. The message was, at some point, you’re going to be the guy in the water, and you’re not going to complain about it. You’re going to push as hard as you can,’ Damon said. In a separate Hollywood Reporter interview, he described Bernthal as the ‘first example of somebody pushing past what they thought they could do.’ The Trojan Horse setting carried a particular weight for Nolan: G Adventures reports he had envisioned it partially buried in Moroccan coastal sands since 2003, when he was briefly considered to direct Warner Bros.’ Troy before Wolfgang Petersen took the helm.
Anne Hathaway drew a different lesson from the same shoot. In a 3 July interview with Fandango, she said Damon’s consistent positivity reminded the cast not to squander a single day. ‘You didn’t take a moment for granted, and you’re like, “Oh my god, he gets to be here for 10 months. I’m only here for this part. Better not waste a moment,”‘ she said.
Tom Holland offered a complementary observation in the same interview: ‘There was always a smile on his face. He was always kind to everyone in the crew.’

In the Fandango interview, he described reading the script and wondering how Nolan would pull off the production’s ambitions, then consciously parking those concerns. ‘A lot of those were his problems and the technical problems for everybody else, and I was like, “I’m just going to show up, and I’ll be ready,”‘ Damon said. His reasoning was straightforward: if every department took full ownership of its own element, Nolan’s attention could be directed elsewhere, strengthening the whole.
Holland, meanwhile, told GQ in a July 2025 interview that the production was ‘the best experience I’ve ever had,’ describing it as a front-row seat to Nolan’s craft. Robert Pattinson, who plays Antinous, the most hostile of the suitors pursuing Odysseus’s home and wife, provided a different kind of reassurance. Holland told Empire that working alongside Pattinson, a prior collaborator, felt like having ‘a real safety blanket’ on set. ‘I’m always eager to share scenes with Rob, because he just brings the best out of everyone,’ Holland said.
The most self-deprecating moment of the entire press tour arrived on the 20 July episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, when host Josh Horowitz praised Damon for the ‘greatest bicep work’ he had seen ‘outside of a Hemsworth film.’ Damon redirected the compliment immediately to his female stunt double, saying she had the ‘greatest arms’ he had ever seen. ‘It was almost 100% my arms in the movie, but you’ve got to give it where it’s due,’ he said.
The film’s opening weekend gross of approximately $123.5 million in the US and Canada, as recorded by IMDb, suggests audiences were watching. Whether the lessons travel as well as the box office remains the real test.
