Bruton Knowles Bolsters Minerals Capability with Senior Associate Hire

Mark Stephenson

Bruton Knowles has reinforced its minerals credentials with the appointment of Mark Stephenson as Senior Associate within its National Utilities & Infrastructure Team.

A Chartered Minerals Surveyor, Mark arrives following an accomplished career encompassing mining legacy remediation, minerals valuation, and both estate and environmental management. His previous senior roles include positions at Aggregate Industries, where he oversaw elements of the company’s estate across the South of England, as well as Wardell Armstrong and, most recently, SLR Consulting as part of the Crown Estate Minerals Team.

According to the latest report from the British Geological Survey, 176.3 million tonnes of minerals were extracted in the UK in a single year, underscoring the scale of activity across the sector.

This consistent production highlights strong and ongoing demand for minerals expertise nationwide — demand that Bruton Knowles’ new Minerals Team, under Mark’s leadership, is well placed to meet.

Mark’s technical strengths across minerals and waste sectors, land and estate management, and environmental oversight — together with his experience spanning large-scale quarrying and mining operations through to intricate contaminated land schemes — make him ideally positioned to head the newly established Minerals Team.

Working alongside Chartered Mineral Surveyor Nigel Billingsley and Graduate Mineral Surveyor Jack Piercy, Mark will help broaden the firm’s minerals provision, expand national contracts and enhance services for existing clients.

Speaking about his appointment, Mark said: “I was drawn to Bruton Knowles by the chance to join a national consultancy with deep, specialised regional expertise. The firm has an excellent reputation for its technical expertise and local insight, and I was particularly interested in its growing focus on minerals and environmental consultancy.

“I’m looking forward to helping grow the minerals business nationally, building on Bruton Knowles’ existing strengths, and mentoring the next generation of mineral surveyors. There’s a real shortage of expertise in this field, and it’s exciting to help develop that capability within the business.”

Nigel, who helped facilitate Mark’s addition to the business, commented:

“Mark has conducted extensive due diligence over the years, giving him a unique perspective on sites that allows him to uncover opportunities others might not immediately see. His expertise is invaluable to the Bruton Knowles team and he brings a welcome fresh perspective as we continue to strengthen our national minerals capability.”
