Checkout.com and MRC launch new course to help merchants tackle payments complexity

The latest addition to the MRC’s educational portfolio, sponsored by Checkout.com, equips industry professionals with the skills to master the most important metrics in payments.

Checkout.com, a leading global digital payments provider, has announced the launch of a new eLearning course developed in partnership with the Merchant Risk Council (MRC). The programme is designed to help payments professionals cut through complexity and focus on the metrics that matter most, enabling them to enhance their expertise and unlock growth opportunities. Entitled Payment Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), it is the newest addition to the MRC’s expanding education portfolio.

The course provides payments professionals — including payments and eCommerce managers, fraud specialists and financial analysts — with the tools needed to better understand, track and optimise the metrics that drive success in payments. It also examines emerging trends such as AI-powered analytics, real-time payments, open banking and the integration of cryptocurrency.

As payment processes grow increasingly complex, education has become essential to ensure professionals can adapt with confidence. The stakes are significant: Checkout.com’s recent Trust in the Digital Economy report revealed that 66% of consumers view payment performance as the single biggest factor driving trust at the checkout, while 42% would not return to a site after experiencing a failed payment. With customer acquisition costs in eCommerce averaging between $50 and $130, each failed payment risks not only lost revenue but wasted investment. As digital selling channels evolve — including the anticipated rise of agent-driven purchasing and agentic commerce — understanding and optimising payment metrics will be more crucial than ever. The Payment KPIs course aims to equip professionals with the knowledge and tools required to meet these challenges.

“Thriving starts with education. This course is about giving professionals the knowledge they need to navigate payment complexity and focus on the metrics that drive revenue and trust,” said Rory O’Neill, Chief Marketing Officer at Checkout.com. “In a landscape where payment performance directly impacts conversion and customer experience, education in payments is one of the most powerful investments businesses can make.”

“As trends like real-time payments, open banking and cryptocurrency, and soon agentic commerce reshape the payments industry, professionals must stay ahead of evolving performance metrics,” said Julie Fergerson, CEO of the Merchant Risk Council. “At MRC, we’re proud to launch this course alongside Checkout.com, delivering accessible, actionable insights that help payments and risk professionals optimise performance with confidence.”

The course complements the expanding portfolio of Checkout.com-sponsored MRC programmes, including Payment Essentials and Fraud Essentials. Developed as part of a multi-year partnership between Checkout.com and MRC, these courses demonstrate a shared commitment to empowering payments professionals with the education they need to foster trust, improve performance and succeed in a rapidly changing digital economy.
