Global Banking School appoints Professor Ray Lloyd as new CEO


London (England)—Higher education provider Global Banking School (GBS) announced today the appointment of Professor Ray Lloyd as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Professor Lloyd will assume the role beginning September 2020.

Professor Lloyd joins GBS from Leeds Trinity University, where he has served as Deputy ViceChancellor since 2013. A leading sports scientist, Professor Lloyd has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals (specifically in the area of human athletic performance),m and previously worked with prominent sporting organisations such as Leeds United FC, Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the LTA Regional Academy in Leeds, and the Botswana Athletics Association.

“We are delighted to welcome Professor Lloyd as our new CEO,” said Dr Vishwajeet Rana, Chairman of the Executive Board. “Professor Lloyd has been a lifetime coach, great academic, and savvy administrator. The GBS community looks forward to benefitting from his experience as we move to the next stage in developing both international collaborations and furthering our work in widening participation.”

Dr Rana will remain on as GBS’s Chairman of the Executive Board.

Before joining Leeds Trinity University Professor Lloyd held academic posts at the University of Abertay (where he was Dean of the School for Social and Health Sciences) and Leeds Metropolitan University.

He holds a PhD and a Master’s degree in Sport Science from Leeds Beckett University, a PGCE from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Manchester.

New transition support programme helps prevent anxiety about moving from Year 6 to secondary school


primary2secondary is a new online support programme to help parents of children entering Year 6. Every September, approximately 750,000* children move to Year 6, and their parents have to choose and apply for a secondary school place by the end of October. In many cases, parents and children are anxious about the upcoming move and confused about the process and preparation required.

This combined online programme/community is the only one of its kind in the UK. Using online videos, information downloads, and an online community, the programme provides detailed information and guidance on:

• How to choose and apply for the most appropriate secondary school
• How to deal with child anxieties over subjects such as bullying, homework, getting lost, etc.
• Practical issues such as travel, equipment, uniforms, etc.

Parents and Teachers are turning to technology amidst school closings

Last week, Boris Johnson announced that schools across the UK will close, to halt the spread of the coronavirus. As a result, thousands of children are now taught remotely. In search of ways to accommodate the new reality faced by British families, many parents and teachers are turning to technology.

Teachers work side by side with artificial intelligence in online lessons

Starting last Saturday, education technology company Atom Learning hosted their first free online lesson, with 958 children attending.

The company has free lessons scheduled throughout the coming weeks, with thousands of parents signing up their children for the lessons.

How One Photographer has Committed to the Fight Against Middle School Bullying, One Photo


Casey Scalf of Storybook Studios in Chesapeake, VA is helping build the self-esteem of young girls who have been bullied, through the power of photography.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. 10/22/19— “I created this program a couple of years ago when I started hearing parents tell me about how hard middle school is on their girls. The bullying in middle school is horrible and is detrimental to their self-confidence.” said Scalf.

“As preteens, kids develop their self-esteem during these very important years. We are hearing way too often that kids this age are getting bullied and it breaks my heart. We need to show them that they are worthy…worthy of self-confidence, worthy of loving who they are, worthy of being here to live their life.” said Scalf.

“Since our high school senior portraits have changed the self-confidence of so many seniors, I felt compelled to create the Fearless Spirit Model Crew. This program is designed to boost their self-esteem and self-worth through their own Fearless Spirit portrait session and six monthly model crew sessions.” said Scalf.

By giving Casey a few months of their time, she shows them the negative image they have of themselves is wrong.

“Throughout the process, I take photos of them and prove to them, ‘See this is how beautiful you are. There’s no denying that. It’s truly you.” said Scalf.

The First Annual Fearless Spirit Fashion Show and Charity Event at Storybook Studios in Chesapeake on October 26th at 6:00 p.m. This event will be the final photo session and graduation of the Fearless Spirit Model Crew. They will be modeling fearless fashions created by Casey Scalf, owner and photographer of Storybook Studios. This will be the culmination of a 6 month process of building the self-esteem of 9 middle school and high school teen girls who have been bullied and who have been struggling with their self-esteem. With this last photo session, they are challenged to be truly fearless and walk the runway! We want them to be proud and celebrate their unique quirks and all the little things that make them who they are. Ticket sales will go to help support the charity To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness for people who are struggling with mental health issues like depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

New research reveals 66% of parents are terrified of kids getting sick when they go back to school

Every parent will agree that schools and nurseries are breeding grounds for coughs, colds, and infections. When a youngster starts school or nursery, they seem to suffer an endless cycle of minor ailments, that then seem to infect the whole family.

New research from Naturelly and VYPR bears this out with over 66% of parents approaching the new school year with great trepidation and fear that their children will get sick at their new school. Parents Say It Takes Kids Over A Week To Get Back Into School Life

With the majority of kids back to school this week, researchers have been looking in to the effect it has on parents and their children. One of the most interesting things they found was that the majority felt it takes children more than a week to get back into the swing of school after they return from the summer break.

After six weeks of no homework, going to bed late and spending lazy days in their pyjamas getting back into a routine is a shock to the system.

Poor concentration, lack of energy and increased irritability are among the issues children struggle with as they return to the classroom.

According to the study of 2,000 parents, two thirds said their kids found it tough, with one week and one day the typical time it takes to adjust.

In addition, the poll found 58 per cent of kids are grumpier when they return to school, and 22 per cent are more likely to get into trouble with the teachers.

Dr. Emma Derbyshire, Public Health and children’s nutrition expert for Soreen, who commissioned the research, said: “After the school holidays, getting children back into their school routine can be difficult.

“School days can feel long and by the end of the day when we pick them up, they can by grouchy and experiencing an afternoon energy slump.”

The Soreen study research also revealed 40 per cent found their children resisted doing homework and 36 per cent were less interested in learning.

Sadly, 45 per cent complain that they don’t like school in the first few weeks.

To reset their children’s body clock from holiday mode to back to school, many parents enforced earlier bedtime (62 per cent) and set mealtimes (35 per cent).

Others admitted giving them more sugary snacks (12 per cent) and even setting extra homework (21 per cent) to ease them back into the school routine.

To try and combat tiredness, lethargy and lack of concentration, four in ten parents pack their children’s lunchboxes with foods which will boost their energy during the day.

And while 45 per cent struggle to find snacks that are healthy which the children will enjoy, four in ten did notice negative effects when their children eat unhealthy foods.

One in six parents said foods which are high in sugar or fat leave their children more agitated, while one fifth can’t concentrate for long periods of time.

One quarter of those who took part in the study by OnePoll.com said their children’s energy levels spike then quickly decline following a sweet treat.

Dr .Emma Derbyshire added: “Maintaining a good diet is vital for helping a child ease back into school so they have the energy to get through a full day.

“Fuelling your children with sugary snacks will only exacerbate the problem with children having sugar lows and spikes.

“Soreen’s Lunchbox Loaves are a tasty healthy way to fuel your child and offset the afternoon lethargy that children can often experience during term time.”

“Without good slow releasing energy, it is no wonder that children struggle with a routine straight after a holiday.”

Diet – Children should aim to eat a varied diet to get the range of nutrients that they need. Breakfast skipping should be avoided as this helps to provide them with key vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fibre.

When on the run its a good idea to pack some fresh fruit and snacks such Soreen which have slow release energy are great for lunchboxes as this will help to keep their energy levels up ready for the afternoon.

Sleep – Every child is different but children of school age need about 10 hours sleep. They should start to wind down about 1 hour before bed and devices such as I-pads should be avoided as this can stimulate rather than relax them.

A nice bath, hot drink of milk, or Horlicks can also help to relax them ready for a good night’s sleep.

Routine – As for most of us routine is key – we are, after all, creatures of habit. With a routine, children know what to expect and when to expect it.

So a good healthy breakfast, glass of water before school, mid-morning snack and drink, balanced lunch, afternoon snack and evening meal followed by some reading or family activities can really help children and prevent confusions which can develop into tantrums or arguments.

Mindset – Rather than plunging them back into school have a talk about it. Perhaps they have missed some particular friends or something they usually do at school. Start to get them ready for school by taking them shopping, involving them and asking them to pick things for their lunchbox or pencil case.

Pupils returning to school are more likely to get a new tablet device than pencil case

Its that time of year again – Back to school! Up and down the country parents and children are furiously ticking off the list of items they need before the start of term.

However, whilst that list has traditionally included things like pencil cases and pens, it appears technology is now dominating the back to school essentials list.

Pupils returning to school are now more likely to get a new tablet device than pencil case, a study into changing classroom habits has found.

Researchers found that 55 per cent of children are given a new iPad or similar device as they head back to school, compared to only 46 per cent who get a new pencil case.

It also emerged fewer kids walk to school now, dropping from 81 per cent in their parents’ schooldays to just 63 per cent now, with a third of kids preferring to use a scooter to make it to the school gates.

And almost one in three children now listen to music on the way to school instead of chatting with friends as their parents used to.

Kids are also ten times less likely to have a tuck shop selling sweets compared to their own parents’ schooldays.

While just six per cent of schools still offer a shop with sugary snacks, 63 per cent of parents admitted their old school had a tuck shop stuffed with treats.

Instead, three quarters of modern schools have a healthy lunch-box policy, usually banning nuts and many insisting on low-sugar packed lunch.

The poll for parenting site ChannelMum.com also revealed kids are more connected to their pals than in the past.

Founder Siobhan Freegard said: “Back to school is a sign of the times, becoming more hi-tech each year.

“From uniforms to devices in lessons to after-school routines, parents, pupils and schools are using the best of the modern world to make learning fun and enjoyable.

“But while the fashions and food may change but the one thing that doesn’t change about Back to School is the excitement.

“Six weeks is a long break and kids are looking forward to going back – with many parents feeling the same way too!”

It also emerged 68 per cent of parents said they rushed back to school to catch up with friends they hadn’t seen for the six-week break compared to 23 per cent now.

This is because modern kids check-in daily with friends through the holidays on social media, so already know what their schoolmates have been up to.

Uniforms are another big area of change. One third of parents wore hand-me down togs, just 14 per cent of modern children make do with second-hand uniforms.

Instead, 68 per cent are now kitted out with the latest hi-tech, Teflon coated uniforms from supermarkets ranges.

To finish off the school-ready look, one in five girls now don trendy outsize JoJo Bows, compared to 77 per cent of mums who preferred ‘scrunchie’ hairbands.

The post-school routine has also changed radically, with more than half of parents having a regular bedtime story, while a third of modern children watch daily family vlogs on YouTube like The Ingham Family now instead.

But the survey of 1,097 mums and dads revealed some schooldays things have stayed the same.

Four in five kids say they are ‘excited’ to going back to school – the same as in their parent’s day.
