African-American Children’s Chapter Book Series Addresses Identity, Character, and Self-Confidence

African American girls are not monolithic, they are magical! Dara Nichole, Author of the Children’s book series Madison Miles & Friends explores the depth of this subject in great detail. This exciting book series focuses on every young black girls experience dealing with self-identity, character, and loving themselves. Each book consists of 10 chapters with colorful illustrations for those transitioning from picture books to chapter books.

Two of the books from the series are available for purchase today. Madison Miles and the Big, Big Move features a 12-year- old Madison Miles struggling with the adjustment after a big move with her family from Georgia to Michigan. Olivia Jackson and the Great Cupcake Caper explores the life of a girl who is experiencing stress as she tries to maintain her studies, friendships, and her first big cupcake order. Mackenzie Owens and the great, big oops focuses on pride as Mackenzie tries to “Keep up” with her rich cousins.

The series highlights four characters—Madison Miles, Olivia Jackson, Mackenzie Owens and Jihan Taylor— a diverse group of black girls who each have a love for learning. For example, Madison loves science, and Olivia adores math. It’s a fun, educational series for transitional readers.

“My reason for writing this series was two- fold, I saw the need for students of color to see themselves in the books they were reading, but I also saw a need for students who were not of color to read about children they don’t see every day. In addition to this, a third grade law was created in Michigan that would hold children back if they could not read at a third-grade level,” said author Dara Nichole.

In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help to those students. The law also states that third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind beginning with the 2019-20 school year.
