How to have everything under control when moving?

3 Months before you move

If you’re ready to move, you might want to consider reducing the quantity of items you own. You should begin the downsizing process as soon as possible to enable yourself ample time to completely arrange your property without becoming overwhelmed. You should begin at least three months before your anticipated relocation date, but the sooner the better. Again, you have the option of doing it yourself or hiring a professional.

Decluttering thoroughly before relocating can not only save you time and energy on both ends of your move, but it will also help you save money. Why? The more stuff you have, the more expensive transportation becomes. You could earn some money on a garage sale that will help you with the costs of moving.

2 Months before you move

When relocating, you should think about whether you want to save money by doing it yourself or hiring a professional moving company. The average cost of a local move is $1,250, and it rises to $4,890 for long-distance moves of more than 1000 miles.

If money is limited, you may assume that a do-it-yourself move is the greatest approach to cut moving costs. Moving on your own is not free, even if it is less expensive than hiring a full-service moving company. Some do-it-yourself transfers might cost as low as $500. You may save a lot of money by packing your belongings yourself and renting a moving van or a portable storage container.

If you plan to use a professional moving company or rent a portable storage container for your move, 60 days before your planned move you should contact the company and go over the details about your move and start preparing your move out.

By this time you should also use up, sell, recycle or donate anything you do not want to take to your new home.

Also, it is important that you sort out all your important paperwork and prepare them for moving, you might consider using banker boxes to pack valuable documents.

30 days before you move

When it comes to this point, all the preparation should be mostly finished. You should start removing and disconnecting cables and counting the items that you are bringing to your new home. Basically making an inventory to make sure nothing is left behind or lost in transport.

Is relocating not what you have in mind when thinking of fun? You’re not alone. It probably isn’t on many people’s lists of their favourite activities. The unfortunate truth is that moving will have to be done when the time comes. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the entire packing list, divide it into tiny portions to make the process go more easily. A daily packing schedule might make packing for a move easier — or at least less stressful.

Once you have a list written down, set a timer and pack for at least an hour a day, making sure boxes are not more than 50 lbs.

Using different color labels for each room will help you stay organized. Make sure you tick off as you complete your list.

2 weeks before you move

Make sure your new home is ready for your moving-in by arranging all the necessary inspections and services to be completed before you arrive.

Also, you should put together all your important documents like passport, deeds, financial statements etc. in case you need them urgently.

7 days before you move

Last week before your moving day make sure everything important is packed and secured, and start packing all the final pieces. Make sure to go through your inventory list to make sure everything is in place.

In case you are using a moving company, confirm the final details like when they should arrive and what is the moving date. Make sure that all your deliveries and subscription to your current address are cancelled or rerouted to your new home.

Return all the items you borrowed from your neighbours, friends or even books from the library.

On moving day

Prepare a survival kit (food, water, important documents, daily toiletries etc.) for your trip, notify the police if your property is going to be vacant for a long time and in case you hired a moving company to sit back and relax and let the professionals do their job.
