Low-Cost Airline easyJet Soars to New Records

Low-Cost Airline easyJet Soars to New Records

British low-cost airline easyJet was established in 1995. Since then, the airline has dedicated its offerings to help travellers and passengers cut costs in their travel plans. According to the company’s latest report, easyJet announced a significant reduction in losses for the six months, with a pre-tax loss expected to range between £340 and £360 million, marking an increase of more than £50 million from 2023. The low-cost airline attributed these positive results to increasing capacity to meet higher demand and investing in making operations more efficient.

Despite higher fuel prices, the company has successfully kept costs relatively stable. The company also expects the positive results to lead to a steady increase in bookings for summer 2024. easyJet bookings for the summer are already 70% sold.

Johan Lundgren, chief executive officer of easyJet, also commented on the company’s further enhancement of its network by launching new bases in Alicante and Birmingham, allowing flexibility for more passengers across Europe. Lundgren has also stated that they expect the company to be one of the fastest-growing major airlines in Europe in the future.

easyJet’s offerings

In terms of low-cost airlines, easyJet has long established its presence in the UK and Europe. Similar to fellow low-cost airline Ryanair, easyJet employs various cost-cutting measures to allow affordable travel. This includes not selling connecting flights and not providing complimentary snacks on board. Instead, the company focuses on high aircraft utilisation, quick turnaround times, and including additional charges for flight extras such as priority boarding, holding baggage, and onboard food.

On the company’s official website, easyJet also offers a low-fare finder for passengers to easily find and schedule cheap flights to various destinations worldwide, from Albania to Turkey. easyJet also has a built-in flights timetable page to help travellers plan out holiday routes at the most affordable rate possible. Additionally, passengers can opt for an easyJet Plus Membership, where they pay one upfront cost for a whole year of benefits, including a large cabin bag for every flight, selecting plane seats, and special discounts for in-flight purchases. Passengers can also benefit from easyJet’s Price Promise offering and other perks.

Beyond low-fare flights, easyJet also offers holiday deals such as beach holidays and cheap city breaks in beautiful destinations, such as Mykonos or Amsterdam. Aside from cheap flights, these packages also include hotels, 23 kg of luggage, and potential airport transfers.

Another benefit of flying with easyJet is its continuous expansion in terms of airports and destinations. Most recently, the company announced new flights taking off from Edinburgh to destinations like Egypt, Bordeaux, and Lapland. The airline also recently added a ninth aircraft to meet growing passenger demand. The new flights are set to allow passengers flights to Hurghada in Egypt, Rome Fiumicino, Rovaniemi in Lapland and Bordeaux. easyJet has also introduced six new routes from Scotland, including Lisbon and Porto from Glasgow.

easyJet and philanthropy

Aside from its generous business model, easyJet is also active in its philanthropy. Led by founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou — also patron of The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation — easyJet has engaged in numerous philanthropic initiatives over the years.

In a recent post, we highlighted young entrepreneur Jon Hill who was awarded a major investment from The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation and Leonard Cheshire. Awarded during The Stelios Awards for Disabled Entrepreneurs 2023, the award aims to foster innovation among disabled entrepreneurs, empowering them to overcome obstacles and establish thriving businesses. Hill’s company, JACK RYAN, has become one of the six gold-standard agencies in the UK, earning significant partnerships with industry giants like Google and Meta.

easyJet is also no stranger to charity flights, where charities receive proceeds from flights to raise funds for their causes. The British low-cost airline offered one such charity flight to the Northern Lights in February 2023. The initiative was in collaboration with the charity, Aerobility, to help disabled flyers. The memorable flight gave passengers a unique experience of seeing the famed Northern Lights from 30,000 feet.
