5 Tips for Enjoying Your Alone Time More

Some people love having time alone and see it as the best thing ever, but others really hate it. If you struggle to relax and enjoy spending time by yourself, instead, feeling restless and bored, don’t worry – you’re not alone. In fact, while it’s not the best reaction to feel, it is a totally normal one, especially today when we are used to being connected to others all the time. But with the current pandemic leaving more people forced to spend more time alone than they are used to, taking steps to make sure that you’re actually enjoying your time by yourself will help you immensely.

Start off Slowly

If the thought of spending time alone makes you feel terrified, don’t jump straight into days by yourself. Start off slowly by spending small periods of time on your own and plan some activities to do that you enjoy, ensuring that you’re able to keep yourself busy and calm while you are alone. Before long, spending time on your own is likely to feel less scary and you’ll probably even start to enjoy it.

Get Some Background Noise

No matter what else you’re doing, many people find it very distracting and worrisome when they are completely alone with their own thoughts. If you can’t stop your mind from racing when you are on your own, getting some background noise can help. Something as simple as playing your favourite music can make all the difference in how you feel when you are spending time alone. Find some good apps and websites for audio streaming and put together a playlist that will lift your spirits and help you stay focused on whatever you’ve decided to do by yourself.

Bust Boredom

Many people who don’t like spending time alone feel this way because their alone time is boring. If you find yourself sitting on your couch at a complete loss of what to do, or mindlessly scrolling through social media for hours when you’re alone, it’s no surprise that you’re not really enjoying it as much as you could be. Thankfully there are several great hobbies that you could try when on your own to pass the time and make it much more enjoyable. Arts and crafts, reading, DIY, cooking, or movie marathons are all just some great activities that you can easily do by yourself to make spending time alone much more fun and fulfilling.

Be Yourself

One of the best things about spending time alone is that you really do get the chance to be your truest self. Whether you’re dancing around in your underwear to cheesy music or talking out loud to yourself about how your week has gone, being alone really gives you the chance to be the truest version of yourself without any fear of judgment from anybody. So, go ahead and indulge in all your guilty pleasures.

Be Productive

If you’ve got some alone time and aren’t sure what to do with yourself, you could always use that time to be productive and get stuff done. If your family is going away for the weekend and you’re staying at home, this can be a great opportunity to get all those tasks that you’ve been putting off done and out of the way. Chores and tasks might not be at the top of your list of fun things to do by yourself, but having the chance to get them done without distractions or interruptions from other people can be very satisfying.

If you don’t know what to do with yourself when you are by yourself, you’re not the only one. In today’s connected world, being alone can feel wrong – but when you learn to enjoy it, it can be very good for you.
