Growing Beyond Pain: UPenn Professor Launches First-of-its-Kind COVID Study
Professor Amrita V. Subramanian Is Seeking Over 100 Participants From Around the World for First Phase of Global Study
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – April 13, 2021 – For the first time in modern-day history, the world has shared a collective trauma. The COVID-19 pandemic has shattered our perceptions of reality and the world around us and united us by the strangest of truths — that of fear and death. Despite these negative experiences, Professor Amrita V. Subramanian wonders if something good can come from all this. This is the premise behind her new global study that will explore how pain leads to growth and analyze our ability to heal ourselves in the midst of this unparalleled crisis.
In the first phase of the study, Subramanian plans to interview over 100 adults from around the globe of all genders, ethnicities and nationalities to examine their shared experiences. To learn more about the study or to submit your information to participate visit www.growingbeyondpain.com.
“People are often surprised at who they can become if they are willing to embrace new ways of life, loving and living in the midst of crisis,” says Subramanian. “I’m convinced, based on my own personal experiences and previous literature on the topic, that my research will show we can come out of the pandemic stronger and with a renewed sense of identity, purpose and community.”
Subramanian’s life has been shaped by continuous growth from trauma. As a young child, she was abandoned in a convent to grow up with other children like her. The trauma and abuse she endured resulted in selective mutism until she was 11 years old, among other things. Today, she can see how such painful episodes throughout her life taught her to grow and now fuels her passion to help others.
The study will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and the research will be included in Subramanian’s upcoming book.
“This study has the potential to ignite a global movement by empowering humanity with the insight on how we can revise our inner scripts to heal ourselves individually and collectively as a society.”
