The USWNT defeated Wales 2-0 in their Send-Off match on July 9 in San Jose, California, in front of a sellout crowd of 18,000. Under Vlatko Andonovski, the United States will enter the World Cup with a record of 50 wins, 6 draws, and 5 losses in 61 games.

With their early 2022 victory in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup Play-off, Vietnam became one of the earliest teams to qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. At the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Vietnam will compete for the first time along with seven other countries.

The US and Vietnam will be meeting for the first time in the group stage opener, but it will be the fifth straight World Cup in which the USWNT has opened against a team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

USWNT vs Vietnam venue

The United States will face Vietnam in their debut encounter at Eden Park, New Zealand’s most prestigious stadium. Eden Park, normally the location of matches for New Zealand’s All Blacks and Black Ferns (the men’s and women’s national rugby teams), also hosted the second match of 2023 for the United States. On January 21, in front of a then-record crowd of 12,721, the United States finished their January camp with a 5-0 victory over New Zealand. Rose Lavelle contributed to the U.S. victory with a hat trick and an assist.

USWNT vs. Vietnam prediction

The upcoming group stage opener in Auckland will mark the first-ever encounter between the USA and Vietnam, adding Vietnam to the list of 57 different opponents that the USWNT has faced throughout its history.

The USWNT has had an impressive record of remaining undefeated in 15 consecutive matches against AFC teams at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, as well as in its last 22 matches overall against AFC opponents.

The USWNT will aim to have a decisive game in order to establish a favorable position within the group. During the ongoing World Cup, it is expected that teams may experience some nervousness, as they often reserve their strongest performance for facing the top-ranked team. Therefore, it is unlikely that we will witness a significant margin of victory in the double digits.
