A poll of 2,000 adults revealed 78 per cent of Brits now opt to stay in the warm rather than going on a night out during this time of year.

It also emerged around half admit they have made up an excuse for not going out in order to don their pyjamas and have a cosy night in.

Meals most likely to accompany a night in front of the telly include homemade curry, steak and chips and pizza.

It also emerged 43 per cent cook meals at home instead of spending their money on nights out or ordering in a takeaway in the lead up to Christmas.

The research was carried out by meal kit provider Hello Fresh UK.

CEO Claire Davenport said: “A cosy night in is something to really look forward to and a great way to spend quality time with friends and family or relax by yourself.

“The survey shows Brits prefer cooking a meal at home to ordering a takeaway as they want something more nutritious.

“This study shows that creating great food and classic home entertainment is a winning formula.”

The study also found saving money for Christmas, not wanting to leave the house in the dark and enjoying home comforts when it’s cold outside are cited as some of the reasons Brits love a night in.

For a perfect night in Brits need to be in their sleepwear no later than 8pm for maximum cosiness and one in five opt for a long bubble bath.

Thirty-six per cent of adults enjoy a night in as an opportunity to spend quality time with their partner.

And a further tenth just love the opportunity to lie back and eat biscuit after biscuit, according to the research conducted via OnePoll.

When it comes a night-in activity, the majority of adults enjoy sitting in front of the TV all night – with 54 per cent settling in to watch a movie and 31 per cent getting stuck into a TV box set.

Other television programmes high on the watch list include Game of Thrones, Strictly Come Dancing and Coronation Street.

Researchers found half of Brits most want to spend a cosy night in with their partner, while 15 per cent like the idea of the whole family cuddling up together.

In order to get out of a night on the tiles instead of staying at home, 45 per cent of Brits have faked an illness.
