Cheltenham Festival Day 3 Races

Seven races will be running on day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival, scheduled for Thursday, 16th March 2023. It is the penultimate day of the Cheltenham Festival and features plenty of fan favourites, including the Ryanair Steeple Chase and the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle. The full schedule of day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival features the following races.

Day 3

The Turners Novices’ Chase

The first race of day 3 at the Cheltenham Festival is the Turner Novices’ Chase and is run over 2m 4f. It has been run at the festival since 2011 and features horses aged five years and above. Last year, Rachael Blackmore had yet another winner in this race on Bob Olinger for Henry de Bromhead; five of the last seven winners of the race have been aged seven. Willie Mullins is the leading trainer in this race, with four wins.

The Pertemps Network Final

Having been run at the festival since 1974, the Pertemps Network Final is a crowd favourite at Cheltenham and is the first hurdle race of day 3. It is run on the new course at Cheltenham, and the Grade 3 race was won by Hughie Morrison’s Third Wind last year, ridden by Tom O’Brien. Willie Wumpkins holds the record for most wins in this race, having won it three years between 1979-1981.

The Ryanair Steeple Chase

The third race of the day is another popular one, the Ryanair Steeple Chase. This Grade 1 race has been dominated by Willie Mullins horses in recent years, who have five wins in this race, including each of the last three years. The race is 4m 2 ½f and has 17 fences for the horses to navigate. Shishkin has been the odds-on favourite in the ante-post markets for some time.

The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle (Feature Race)

The day’s feature race is the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle, which is to be run at 15:30 on day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival. It is a Grade 1 race run over 2m 7f and features 12 hurdles. The first-ever edition of the Stayers’ Hurdle was run all the way back in 1912 when £100 was awarded to the winner, Aftermath — the winner this year will receive £135,048. Flooring Porter will be going for a hat-trick of victories in this race after winning at 12/1 and 4/1 in 2021 and 2022, respectively, as he looks to become only the second horse to achieve the feat alongside Big Bucks. Expect plenty of Cheltenham offers around this race.

Craft Irish Whiskey Co. Plate Handicap Chase

Following the feature race of the day is the Craft Irish Whiskey Co. Plate Handicap Chase. There is £46,423 waiting for this 2m 4½f race’s winner, which also features 17 fences. The race has been run since 1951 and was won last year by Coole Cody to give trainer Evan Williams his first-ever win. A Grade 3 race with a significant field, this is one of the more wide-open races at the Cheltenham Festival each year.

The Mares Novices’ Hurdle

The Mares Novices’ Hurdle is the sixth race of day 3 at the Cheltenham Festival and is a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race. This will be just the eighth time this race has been run at the Cheltenham Festival and was won last year by Love Envoi, ridden by Jonathan Burke. Willie Mullins dominated the early editions of this race, winning each of the first five Mares Novices’ Hurdles. This race is run over a 2m 1f with eight hurdles to be jumped.

Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup

The final race of the day is the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup, another old race first run in 1946. This is a 3m 2f handicap race with 21 fences to be jumped. The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup was won by Chambard, who became the first 10-year-old to win the race since Maximise in 2004 — the only older horse to win the race during that time was 12-year-old The Package in 2015.

Cheltenham Festival Day 3 Feature Race

As mentioned above, the feature race of day 3 at the Cheltenham Festival is the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle. This is the fourth race of the day and is run at 15:30, with the winner rewarded with a jaw-dropping £135,048. A Grade 1 event, it features some of the best horses at the Cheltenham Festival, and there is a chance of history this year as Flooring Porter looks to make it a hat-trick of wins in the Stayers’ Hurdle after wins in 2021 and 2022.

Flooring Porter is still only halfway to becoming the most successful horse in the history of the race, with the record for most wins being held by the impressive Big Bucks who won this race in four consecutive years between 2009-2012. Ruby Walsh was on board for all of those successes and added another win in 2017 on Nichols Canyon, making him the most successful jockey in the history of the Stayers’ Hurdle. There are always plenty of excellent Cheltenham Festival offers around the feature races each day, and expect the Stayers’ Hurdle to have some of the best Cheltenham betting offers around it.
