Dr Ashwin Porwal: The man with a plan

When Dr Ashwin Porwal decided to take up Proctology as his specialization after completing his M.B.B.S. from B.J. Medical College, Pune, unlike many other doctors, he had already developed a plan regarding what he wanted to do with his future and for the medical scenario of the country.

Not many doctors generally take up Proctology as their major subject. Dr Porwal, however, chose this unique branch of medicine dealing with ailments of the rectum and anal region and went on to become a pioneer in the field.

With diplomas in Proctology from Italy and Laparoscopy from France, Dr Porwal trained extensively under colorectal surgeon, Dr Antonio Longo after completing a D.N.B. in General Surgery from Poona Hospital and Research Centre. He continued his plans of providing specialty treatment to patients affected by rectum and anal ailments and as was his vision, he launched India’s first Proctology clinic – Healing Hands Clinic – in 2008 in Pune.

Aided by world-class technology, extensive research, and a very well-trained and disciplined staff, Healing Hands offers medical care and relief to patients from all over the country as well as the continent.

Dr Porwal’s plans of establishing a medical system that provides relief to patients continues to be a reality even today as he and his dedicated team of doctors and support staff continue to complete the maximum number of proctologic surgeries across Asia every month.

Researching further on his skills learned from Dr Longo, Dr Porwal has developed his own technique for treatment of fistula known as Distal Laser Proximal Ligation (DLPL) technique.

To add to his long list of accomplishments, Dr Porwal is the first Indian surgeon to have performed the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Suspension Surgery for treating female organ prolapse and incontinence. He has also performed the maximum number of S.T.A.R.R. (Stapled Trans Anal Rectal Resection) surgeries for chronic constipation in Asia.

The first surgeon in India to use laser to remove unwanted hemorrhoidal tissues, Stapled Hemorrhoidopexies, and the maximum number of times so far, Dr Porwal is considered an authority in the field of Proctology in India.

It is his dedication towards his profession that has led to him being awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Excellence in Healthcare in 2015 for his contribution to the medical and health sector in the country.

Not just did Dr Porwal dedicate himself to the treatment of Proctology patients in India, but the man worked on a plan all through and realized it to make life more comfortable and easy for thousands of patients.
