Greenfield Removals opens new Durham office in response to soaring demand for asbestos removal

Greenfield Removals – one of the UK’s leading asbestos removal firms – has announced the opening of a new office in Durham. The opening comes amid growing demand for the company’s services, as organisations and individuals across the UK seek to tackle the long-term health risks that asbestos poses. 

The UK has an asbestos problem. More than 20 years after the country banned the use of asbestos, ResPublica estimates that there are still six million tons of it harboured inside around 1.5 million buildings. But the problem is not being ignored. Greenfield Removals is removing asbestos from domestic, commercial and industrial premises across the UK – and business is booming so rapidly that the company is opening a new office in Durham to keep up with demand. 

Greenfield Removals Peter Dunion comments:

“Exposure to asbestos can be deadly. It can cause cancers up to 50 years after the exposure takes place. This means the presence of asbestos in so many buildings in the UK is a very real and present danger. We’re delighted to be opening a new office in Durham to support even more clients to safely remove asbestos from their premises.”

Asbestos removal firms operate under licence from the Health and Safety Executive, working under carefully controlled conditions. For the removal of higher-risk asbestos, this usually involves building an airtight enclosure and using negative pressure to prevent the spread of the carcinogenic fibres, with operatives wearing full body coveralls and breathing through air-fed respirators. It’s an intricate and difficult process that must be carried out diligently to avoid any risk of contamination. 
Greenfield Removals has built up a reputation for its swift, effective asbestos removal service, which has seen demand for the company’s services soar since it was founded back in 2016. The company provides services across the UK from its original office in Chorley, Lancashire. Now, after a cluster of contract awards in the North East, including work for Teeside University, Greenfield Removals has opened up a new office in Durham to meet demand and to bolster its presence in the area. Greenfield Removals’ Ian Yates continues:

“The figures around asbestos in the UK’s education establishments are shocking. Some 80% of schools and 74% of universities report having asbestos in their buildings – as do many of the UK’s hospitals. We would encourage anyone in this situation to discuss how and when it could be removed.”

The use of blue and brown asbestos in the UK was banned in 1985, with controls over usage implemented several years earlier. The use of white asbestos was banned later – in 1999. In the decades since, the number of deaths resulting from exposure have risen steadily, to the point where asbestos is now the leading cause of occupational death in the UK, causing over 5,000 fatalities per year. Dunion concludes:

“While the situation is worrying, we take comfort in the fact that it’s possible to remove asbestos safely – there is a solution available. And it seems, based on demand for our removal services, that more and more organisations and individuals are determined to tackle the long-term health risks that asbestos poses. That is certainly encouraging, and we are delighted to be able to meet the needs of those clients from our new Durham office.”
