A former Uber engineer shares his advice to layoff tech employees

As companies like Meta and Twitter layoff thousands of workers, uncertainty about job security is increasing. However, someone who has been there before believes that being fired has its advantages, too.

On Wednesday, an anonymous, self-described former Uber employee posted on the Blind app about Two years later, they claim that they were laid-off from a tech job they held for five years.

The Blind appIt is an online community that allows professionals to anonymously exchange their experiences at work. To become a member, users will need to sign up with their company email. Insider cannot verify this information. Insider reached out to the poster but he did not respond. 

Uber laid off over 6,000 employees in May 2020The Covid-19 pandemic was at its height, but it’s not clear if the anonymous employee was among those who were fired.

“Back then, my identity with who I was at the office was with a successful engineer who was doing great work that was going to make an impact,” the post said.

It continued: “I didn’t understand how this could go wrong, all the memories were just wiped by one phone call.”

The poster said she felt “devastated, worthless” after being let down just one month into parental leave. According to the entry, the dismissal was unexpected because of “great ratings” over the past year.

They said that despite initial shame and despair, unemployment brought them important realizations about their job and their personal lives.

One commenter wrote, “I was laid off a while back but have not found a job since.” “I have been devastated for so long. As you, I have not yet shared it with anyone as I am embarrassed and worried about the reaction of my family.”
