allAgents warns millions of unsuspecting elderly tenants to beware of being wrongly overcharged for energy usage

The UK’s largest property review website, allAgents.co.uk, has warned millions of elderly tenants not to fall into the trap of being wrongly overcharged by utility companies for old energy usage after 1st April.

With 22 million households waking up on the first day of the new month with a whopping 54 per cent increase in their energy bills, allAgents calls for households with standard meters to check that their energy providers have the latest meter readings before 1st April.

Vincent Friel, director at allAgents, said: “We ask that letting agents reach out to their tenants – particularly pensioners – and make them aware of this pitfall before it’s too late.

“The elderly and vulnerable are the most at risk for being overcharged for energy pre 1st April as they may not have seen any of the warnings online. Many pensioners are already too scared to put the heating on due to the cost so preventable charges must be avoided.

“With many households working on an estimated reading, if the usage remains underestimated come 1st April, these consumers will find themselves unwittingly being charged at the much higher new tariff for energy consumed prior to this date.

“Householders should compare their last bill readings with their actual consumption and if under estimated, notify their utility companies now with what they believe their actual usage will be at the end of March.

“We also urge friends and family of the elderly and vulnerable to help them with reviewing their true energy readings.”
