Residents to give their views on proposed Westbourne housing redevelopment

Consultation is underway on proposals to redevelop land at Princess Road/Prince of Wales Road in Westbourne to provide affordable housing.

The Council is proposing to develop the site by providing more housing of mixed tenure including predominantly affordable housing. Current options include, a mixed tenure scheme of affordable rent, shared ownership, private rent and emergency family accommodation. 

Councillor Robert Lawton, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Providing more affordable housing is a high priority for the Council and we are committed to delivering much needed good quality housing in Bournemouth. It’s important that any development taken forward is well considered and is sympathetic to the local area. We value the views of local residents and are inviting feedback to help inform the proposed designs and plans that are then submitted for approval.”

 The site previously had a number of older buildings used for young people and move-on accommodation as well as other supported housing purposes. These buildings are no longer fit-for-purpose and have become uneconomical to repair and maintain. Some have now been demolished and work to demolish the others is expected to begin in March 2019.

 The Council is currently working with an architect and before choosing any design, it is looking to consult with the public to consider:

  • Affordable housing
  • Shared ownership
  • Rent to buy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Enhancing the built / local area

 A drop-in consultation session will be held on:  Thursday 7 February 2019, 1 – 7pm at West Cliff Baptist Church, Poole Road, Bournemouth BH4 9DN. Residents will be able to see existing proposals, meet with representatives from the Council’s housing team and architects to ask questions and make comments.

 Following consultation, all feedback will be taken in to consideration with final plans expected to be submitted for planning approval in early summer.
