Polish Police Chief Injured Following Gift Explosion by Ukrainian Official

Authorities said that Poland is seeking answers from Ukraine following a gift by a Ukrainian official to a top Polish officer commander. The explosion was near the latter’s office.

Jarosław Szymczyk, the chief of Poland’s police, suffered minor injuries from the explosion on Wednesday and was admitted to a hospital for observation, the Polish Interior Ministry said in a statement.

“Yesterday at 7.50 a.m., an explosive incident occurred in a room adjoining the office of Police Commander-in Chief,” the statement stated.

It continued, “One of the presents that the Commandant received during his working trip to Ukraine on December 11-12 exploded.”

According to the statement, it was a gift from a head official of Ukraine’s Police and Emergency Situations.

The ministry reported that a civilian employee at the Polish headquarters suffered minor injuries, but was not admitted to hospital.

The ministry stated that it had asked Ukraine for an explanation, and that a case had been opened with the prosecutor and corresponding services.

This incident occurs a month after two Polish citizens were killed in a missile attack by Russia on Ukraine.
