More than 1300% increase in applications for some job roles. How COVID-19 has shifted demand in the recruitment market

  1. 1300% shift in four-month period in certain sectors
  2. Year-on-year shift across all roles increases by average of 144%
  3. Candidates swapping sectors to find employment

Applicants are outweighing job vacancies, with increases as high as 1363% for certain roles in the four months from March to July, according to research from Search Consultancy.

The ratio of applicants applying for all available jobs has, on average, more than doubled during the pandemic when looking at year-on-year comparisons, with a major spike as the UK entered its fourth month of lockdown.

Search Consultancy is a provider of recruitment and executive search services to UK businesses. On analysing the market shift over the course of the year with huge increases in certain roles, pointing to a shift from a candidate-led job market to a client-led one.

Compared to the same period in 2019, the response-to-application ratio from March 2020 – July 2020, showed an increase of 144% year-on-year.

The picture is more stark when comparing like-for-like application data from pre-lockdown with those towards the end. Search looked at the number of people applying for the same roles in March and July of 2020 and the results show staggering increases, in some cases by over 1300 %

With demand shifting, Search has pivoted towards providing extra support for candidates with the provision of help and resources and in many instances helping them transition to completely new sectors.

From the start of the pandemic up until the end of June, Search’s specialist hospitality team placed more 400 temps into healthcare roles, and provided care homes and hospitals with kitchen staff, ward assistants and porters to meet the demand.

This was in addition to the 1,300+ health and social care temps that Search had also placed into key worker positions through its specialist healthcare division.

Dominic Starkey, Search Group Marketing Director, said:

“We are experiencing more than double the amount of applications to any job we post compared with last year. And for some roles, such as General Manager positions, the number of applications for advertised roles has jumped by over 1300%.

“This points to a UK job market that is drastically shifting from one where candidates enjoyed the balance of power, to one that now very much favours employers. It is a trend that look set to continue.

“Though Britain is slowly getting back to work, as restrictions ease, factors such as a second wave of the virus and an abrupt end to the Brexit transition period will likely see this ratio continue or even increase further.

“Employers are in a position now where they’re spoilt for choice when it comes to filling positions, but for candidates it’s an uncomfortably crowded marketplace. As a multi specialist recruiter we are well placed to help people understand their options and where they have transferable skills to explore other sectors where there are opportunities, seen by the pivoting within our hospitality team.”

Demand for antimicrobial and antiviral nanocoatings continues to grow as products come to market

Nanocoatings can demonstrate up to 99.9998% effectiveness against bacteria, formaldehyde, mold and viruses, and are up to 1000 times more efficient than previous technologies available on the market. They can work on multiple levels at the same time: antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal, self-cleaning and anti-corrosion. Nanocoatings companies are already partnering with global manufacturers and cities to develop anti-viral facemasks, hazard suits and easily applied surface coatings. The Global Market for Antimicrobial, Antiviral, and Antifungal Nanocoatings 2020 from Future Markets, Inc. provides an in-depth assessment of the latest products, applications, research and producers.

The use of nanomaterials makes it possible to provide enhanced antiviral, antibacterial, mold-reducing and VOC degrading processes, that are non-toxic and environmentally friendly, allowing for exceptional hygiene standards in all areas of work and life. As a result, it is possible to create a healthier living and working environment and to offer holistic solutions to people with a diminished immune system. Nano-based surface coatings prevent the spread of bacteria, fungi and viruses via infected surfaces of so called high-traffic objects, such as door and window handles in public places, hospitals, public buildings, schools, elderly homes etc.

Antimicrobial, Antiviral, and Antifungal Nanocoatings are available in various material compositions, for healthcare and household surfaces, for indoor and outdoor applications, to protect against corrosion and mildew, as well as for water and air purification. Nanocoatings also reduce surface contamination, are self-cleaning, water-repellent and odour-inhibiting, reducing cleaning and maintenance

Antimicrobial, Antiviral, and Antifungal Nanocoatings can be applied by spraying or dipping and adhere to various surfaces such as glass, metals and various alloys, copper and stainless steel, marble and stone slabs, ceramics and tiles, textiles and plastics.

Nanoparticles of different materials such as metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, metal oxide nanoparticles, and graphene-based materials have demonstrated enhanced anti-microbial and anti-viral activity. The use of inorganic nanomaterials when compared with organic anti-microbial agents is also desirable due to their stability, robustness, and long shelf life. At high temperatures/pressures organic antimicrobial materials are found to be less stable compared to inorganic antimicrobial agents.

Antimicrobial and antiviral nanocoatings applications include, but are not limited to:
• Medical facilities and laboratories
• Medical equipment;
• Fabrics and clothing like face masks;
• Hospital furniture;
• Hotels and other public spaces;
• Window glass;
• Pharmaceutical labs;

Huge Rise in Demand for Seaside Holidays Since the End of Lockdown

A leading UK travel website has witnessed a massive increase in demand for seaside holiday accommodation, following the relaxation of Covid-19 social distancing measures in early July.

Cornwall based holiday company Simply Sea Views has seen its website traffic more than double, as more people than ever search for coastal properties for a post-lockdown holiday.

The hike in demand began on 19th June when the Government announced that UK residents could travel internally again from early July. Since then, website visitor numbers have soared and bookings have increased substantially.

Visits to simplyseaviews.co.uk increased by 153% from an average of 4,500 users per day in the week before the announcement to 11,400 users per day in the week leading up to 19th July.

Website traffic peaked at 13,975 unique users on 19th July, which made it the busiest day in the company’s history.

Business founder and owner Josh Williams commented: “For the past month, we’ve been inundated with enquiries from people looking for holiday accommodation on the coast. It has been our busiest period since we launched the website five years ago.”

Analysis of search terms used to access the website revealed that a majority of visits were from people looking for beach holidays, coastal cottages and properties with sea views.

Josh Williams continued: “It seems that people were desperate to escape to the seaside for a holiday as soon as restrictions eased. It’s always a busy time of year, but levels of demand have been exceptional this season.

“We expected staycations to be very popular this year, as people are reluctant to travel abroad, but we’ve been blown away by the huge spike in interest for holidays by the sea.”

Simply Sea Views promotes holiday cottages, houses and apartments in coastal destinations throughout the UK and Ireland. All 3,640 properties have partial or full sea views, and many are located at or very close to a beach.

Josh Williams added: “We’re in the unique situation where demand is outstripping the supply of holiday homes and we have very limited availability left for this summer. We’re suggesting people visit in the autumn instead when things are quieter. We’re hoping this will help to extend the season and bring much needed custom for coastal tourism businesses.”

Demand for business training soars during lockdown says Forbes coach Adam Stott

As millions of workers have been forced to stay at home over the past few months, there has been a massive spike in the number of commercial opportunities being created by entrepreneurs. Data from startups.co.uk shows that at least five new online businesses were started every day during April, representing an increase of 60% on April 2019. Similarly, statistics from research company, Growth Intelligence, found that more than 85,000 businesses pivoted their traditional sales model to launch e-commerce stores or join digital marketplaces in the last four months.

Lockdown has also seen a huge appetite for business training and coaching, according to one of the UK’s leading business speakers and coaches, Adam Stott. Despite not being able to hold any live business events due to Government restrictions, the Essex-based entrepreneur has achieved double-digit sales growth of his online mentoring and training programmes over the past three months. As well as recording an uplift in UK customers, his business has expanded into international markets with students registering for courses from continental Europe, Dubai, South Africa and the USA.

Having founded his first company in 2008 at the age of 25, Adam built a £40million turnover company in just ten years, which was recognised by Amazon as one of the UK’s fastest growing car retailers and twice voted one of the London Stock Exchange’s ‘Top 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain’, in 2015 and 2016.

In 2016, Stott founded Big Business Events with the aim of sharing his business insight, challenges, successes and failures with both established and aspiring business owners in the UK and overseas. Having developed his status as an international business speaker over the past eight years, Stott has created a business network of over 70,000 individuals and has personally helped hundreds of entrepreneurs achieve their dream of running their own business. In recognition of his contribution to the business community, Stott was accepted into the prestigious Forbes Coaches Council in 2020, where he will continue to share his expertise and knowledge, as well as working with other international business colleagues.

Commenting on the significant increase in online training and coaching, Stott said:

“With more than 750,000 businesses being forced to close their doors under lockdown, the pandemic has levelled the playing field and created the opportunity for entrepreneurs to identify market gaps and deliver online goods and services. There’s no doubt in my mind that traditional businesses must embrace digitalisation if they are to survive. Having sold more than £50million of products and services utilising social media, I want to help new and established business owners to embrace the online space and maximise the potential return from a digital offering. We responded quickly to the economic impact of the pandemic by developing a free ‘Build your business from home’ course, which has been incredibly popular.

“Start-ups and SMEs are crucial to the nation’s financial recovery, so Big Business Events will continue to respond to the needs of those wanting to make the move into business ownership, as well as those looking to pivot and exploit the benefits of social media. All our courses have been designed from first-hand experience, enabling delegates to harness tried and tested strategies that have helped me to achieve business success.”

In addition to launching new programmes, Stott has diversified his offering by teaming up with UK reality TV star, James Lock, star of mainstream shows including ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ and ‘Celebs Go Dating.’ The pair have joined forces to create Instagram Secrets, a new programme for entrepreneurs wanting to learn how to boost their brand engagement, make an impact and generate more sales from their presence on the social media platform.

To Address Overwhelming Demand, Louis Law Group Opens a New Office in Naples

Louis Law Group is well-known across Florida for helping clients obtain full and just compensation for personal property damage claims. The Naples office is the firm’s latest expansion.

Louis Law Group, whose mission is to help its clients obtain full compensation for personal injuries and property damage, is opening a new office in Naples. The Naples office addresses the pent-up demand for knowledgeable, experienced, and aggressive attorneys who can help clients take on insurance companies.

About Louis Law Group

Louis Law Group has a stacked roster of attorneys who are laser-focused on their clients’ needs and objectives. Clients with property damage claims can feel confident that they’re in good hands.

Most homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for various types of property damage , including water damage, hurricane damage, roof damage, fire damage, and even theft damage. Louis Law Group attorneys have seen it all. In cases of claim rejections or low settlement offers, our attorneys can tilt the odds in the clients’ favor. They can handle all aspects of a claims, from gathering necessary evidence and negotiating a fair settlement offer with the insurance company, to going to trial.

Just as important, Louis Law Group attorneys provide peace of mind. Rather than spending hours on the phone haggling with their insurance company, clients can delegate this task to their lawyer and spend more time doing the things they love.

Pierre A. Louis, the senior managing attorney at Louis Law Group, says the firm is especially excited to serve Naples clients. “Our attorneys are ready, willing, and able to help all of our Naples clients fight for the compensation they deserve.”

Smith & Brock satisfy home delivery demand with PODFather

Smith & Brock, the purveyors of premium quality fruit, vegetables and fresh produce to London’s hotels, eateries and schools has launched its new ‘Knock Knock’ home delivery service with job management and customer notifications powered by PODFather. Smith & Brock’s latest venture sees its fleet of 25 vehicles making up to 1,000 deliveries a day to customer homes located throughout the London area. With a company motto of ‘expertly selected, proudly delivered’ Smith & Brock needed to ensure it had the right system in place to meet the company’s delivery service expectations. A PODFather customer since 2017, Smith & Brock saw the value that the system’s accurate job management, and automated customer notifications, could play in the launch of its home delivery service.

“With PODFather we have a simple solution to the complex problem of managing the allocation and execution of deliveries across our fleet,” comments Nick Fowler, Co-Founder of Smith & Brock Ltd. “When we decided to make the move into home delivery it was great to know we already had the right technology in place to ensure the efficient allocation of loads onto our vehicles, and the introduction of ETA notifications for our customers is a great addition to our PODFather solution.”

With PODFather’s cloud-based system in place the Smith & Brock team can manage the movement of its fleet of 25 vehicles, delivering to a wide range of postcodes across the London area. All drivers have the PODFather app, which can be installed on even the most basic of smartphones. The app allows drivers to collect all necessary vehicle check information before leaving the depot. Once out on the road the app allows the Smith & Brock team to track vehicle movements, upload job notifications to drivers, and collect electronic proof of delivery in real time.

“The real time visibility that PODFather gives us has some big customer service benefits,” adds Fowler. “Not only can we now automatically notify customers of their ETA once our drivers have completed and logged their vehicle checks and are ready to leave the depot, but we can also provide real time status updates on the day, while our vehicles are out on the road. This ensures customers are kept informed and are ready to accept their delivery in a safe and timely manner.”

“The current situation we find ourselves in is incredibly challenging for so many of our customers,” comments Colin McCreadie, Managing Director of PODFather. “Smith and Brock is an amazing example of how by adapting, the business has been able to avoid closure, save staff and help thousands of homes with the delivery of essential supplies. We are very proud to be supporting them, during this difficult time.”

Sudden Shift to Remote Work Increases Demand for Sales Productivity Software

New York, NY – The effects of Coronavirus are hitting hard around the globe, with many companies telling their workforce to “stay home”. Yet, as more workers operate remotely, many large companies are finding it difficult to keep up morale and productivity.
We’re being forced into the world’s largest work-from-home experiment and, so far, it hasn’t been easy for a lot of organizations to implement,” said Saikat Chatterjee, Senior Director, Advisory at Gartner, in a recently published report.

Ignite Remote Team Performance
Following the recent shift to remote work for most companies, there has also been a significant uplift in demand for productivity management software. Looking for a way to keep remote teams motivated and productive, many enterprise companies are turning to SaaS platforms that can help build more pipeline and drive more revenue producing activity. SalesScreen has seen a 400% increase in

inbound leads just this week.
“The battle to balance the demands of maintaining workplace productivity remotely while simultaneously igniting teams to peak performance makes SalesScreen uniquely poised to help companies handle this current challenge,” said Frank Matticola, Chief Revenue Officer, SalesScreen. “We believe that technology which enables remote work models can empower companies to maintain momentum during this challenging time and leverage their skills to unlock innovation, engage customers and move their businesses forward.”

There’s a lot that companies can do these days to bring their workforce together, including running fun sales competitions, celebrating achievements openly and collaborating more efficiently throughout the sales process.

Results-Driven Performance
“Recently, a top 3 global software company looking for a way to dramatically improve productivity has turned to SalesScreen. They wanted to positively encourage more outreach, measured in terms of more meetings that would drive more revenue.” Mentioned Sindre Haaland, CEO of SaleSScreen. “After implementing the system, they saw a 76% increase in meeting activity, and as measured in a user survey also drove significant team engagements and culture improvements (Employee survey drove an average of 9.1 rating on a scale of 10 – 10 being best, in a 10 question survey). We believe that this type of performance uplift is essential to companies who may be questioning whether they can hit their revenue goals.”

As employees settle in to new remote working routines for the foreseeable future, it will be imperative that companies find solutions that allow them to increase the engagement and visibility of their teams to boost their productivity from anywhere. We see that SalesScreen is helping teams do exactly that.

Pharmacists at medino have reported a sharp 1044% rise in the demand for hand sanitiser in the UK

The digital pharmacy, medino, has seen sales of hand sanitiser rise by 1044% in February when
compared to the preceding three month period of November to the end of January across the whole of
the UK.

Pharmacists at medino pharmacy have reported a sharp rise in the demand for hand sanitiser in the
UK. In particular, sales of brands such as Carex, Cuticura, Enliven and Numark have seen the most
notable rise since the beginning of February.

The digital pharmacy, medino, has seen sales of hand sanitiser rise by 1044% in February when
compared to the preceding three month period of November to the end of January.

The spike has been notable across the whole of the UK, with medino shipping nationwide from their
warehouse in London.

Top 5 Locations by hand sanitiser sales:

1. London
2. Brighton
3. Cambridge
4. Luton
5. Birmingham

The hotspots for hand sanitiser sales appear to be linked to where cases of the coronavirus have
been confirmed in the UK, with London and Brighton taking the two top spots.

The pharmacy has been keeping up with demand but suppliers are starting to struggle. It’s expected
that this is to continue whilst customers stockpile hand sanitiser supplies.

Superintendent Pharmacist Giulia Guerrini says “Some customers have told us they’ve ordered for
offices and workplaces and we’ve seen large quantities purchased by new customers who have
recently come across our site. We’ve done well to keep up with demand and we’ve managed to
source hand gel from a number of different suppliers here in the UK”.

The Superintendent Pharmacist and her team analysed the buying habits of thousands of medino
customers and found that the number of new customers buying hand sanitiser is increasing as
opposed to their current customers repurchasing.

“A number of these customers are not our regular buyers, rather we’re seeing new customers
purchasing large quantities of hand sanitiser suggesting people are stockpiling in response to recent
events,” said Ms Guerrini.

It’s recommended that you wash your hands with soap and water whenever possible but when that’s
not possible, the best hand sanitiser to use is one with more than 60% alcohol content. Alcohol-based
hand sanitisers don’t kill all germs but they’re very effective at reducing microbes on your skin when
used in the correct way.

ESP Play Demand Sugar Tax Ringfencing Be Reinstated

Burnley, UK. School playground equipment supplier, ESP Play, has denounced the government’s decision to drop the ringfencing of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy to help tackle the obesity crisis in schools. It claims the decision will prevent schools from implementing projects which have been seen to have a positive impact on obesity and mental health.

When first introduced, the government confirmed that income from the Soft Drinks Industry Levy would be ringfenced for use in schools until 2020. Over that time, the hundreds of millions of pounds it has raised have benefitted the health and wellbeing of pupils across the country. However, in the most recent spending review, the treasury has confirmed that ringfencing for income for the 2020-2021 period, forecast to be £340 million, has been removed.

Andrew Wood, Managing Director of ESP Play said, ‘Over the course of our work, we have seen young people benefit significantly from projects funded by the Soft Drinks Industry Levy. Schools that are ambitious to improve the health of their pupils rely on this income and without it, many children will be denied these potentially life-changing opportunities. We have seen the positive things the levy can do and would like to see its income ringfenced once again.’

As part of its services, ESP Play supplies and installs playground and outdoor sports equipment specifically designed to encourage pupils to be more physically active. With financially struggling schools seeing a growth in the number of overweight and obese pupils, the ‘sugar tax’ levy has been instrumental in helping them buy the school playground equipment that has been shown to increase pupil activity levels, both during free time and in PE lessons.

Andrew Wood added, ‘It’s not just pupils’ physical health which is benefitting from the sugar tax. The increased physical activity is also beneficial for mental health and wellbeing and with 12.8% of pupils suffering from a mental health disorder, it’s even more important that ringfencing is reintroduced.’

Note to Editors: ESP Play is a school playground development and CPD training specialist. It supplies and installs outdoor PE, curriculum-based and play equipment, together with playground and sports surfacing, to schools and EYFS providers throughout the UK. Operating from Burnley, Lancashire, it has worked with thousands of schools over the last 16 years.
